Marimekko art deco inspired Astridr coat

30_mm2008_tk

A retro coat is always a great investment and there are so many to choose from it can often be hard to settle on just one. We’ve featured a few pieces from Marimekko before and this Marimekko Astridr coat is a real contender.

The coat uses the geometric Attica pattern Maija Isola from 1959 to ‘evoke the spirit of Art deco’. As pretentious as that sounds, it does ring true on this piece. The rounded shaping of the silhouette softens the coat, leaving the angular print to stand out well.

It’s available now from the Finnish Design Shop for €182.

1960s Japanese Fashion Dolls

JapansefashiondollsBrighton-based vintage shop, Take Me Home, currently has a small selection of 1960s Japanese Fashion Dolls for sale.

Like other cult dolls from that period, they have big eyes and a neutral expression (none of Barbie’s eagar to please white smile).  But the most charming feature is of course their clothing.  These are seriously stylish dolls.

They stand between 41 and 49 cm high and are in various conditions.  Prices are between £45 and £60 per doll.  Contact Take Me Home for further details.

1950s preppy style at Oasis

Oasis_preppy

The circle skirt seems to be very much back in fashion, as I’ve seen them everywhere in shops these past months. In various guises, it’s not often you’ll find one of these skirts looking genuinely retro apart from their shape.

Oasis have run with the theme of 50s retro, though, and created some truly preppy outfits. Featuring these bold floral skirts and lilac knitwear to match, they’re a somewhat brave aspect of the fifties fashion. Not one for wallflowers, these will make a great 50s look if they’re to your tastes. The skirts cost around £50 each.

Dolly styled Mary Jane shoes from Oli

61c269olil

Mary Janes continue to be a classic of shoe design, with styles ranging from cutting edge fashion to faithful retro designs.

This pair from Oli are a great example of the latter. The button detailing on the vamp gives a dollyrocker feel to this pair, along with the chunky heel in favour of the usual stiletto we see these days.

In red patent leather, the sheen is not overdone giving a very wearable everyday shoe for £60.

Paul Frank 60s-style Tambourine Band t-shirt

Frank_tambourine
Not obviously Paul Frank, but this Tambourine Band t-shirt packs a great retro design.

It’s a bit like an independent 1960s cartoon or an illustration for an old teen comic – either way, it is a really stylish graphic, printed onto a light pink top and available in small, medium and large (women’s sizes that is).

You can pick one up for £27.50.

Admiral’s retro trainer range – but only in Japan

Admiral_sheffield

Browsing the Japan-based Ripe website, I noticed a section of footwear from Admiral – and discovered a whole range of retro-styled trainers and pumps.

I’ve not seen these outside of Japan (and I have searched around the web), so I’m guessing this sportswear giant of the 70s (who can forget those England and Wales kits) is making footwear just for the far east.

Above is a picture of the Sheffield trainers (most have English names) and over the page is the latest range of pumps, known as the Oxford. Prices are around £45 for the Sheffield and £34 for the Oxford. If you know more (or represent Admiral), drop us a line or comment below. You can see the full range via the Ripe link.
