Perhaps not for everyone, but if you want a practical talking point in your home, check out the iPhone Gramophone range, the work of iPhone Gramophone Designs.

It's a vintage design in a very real sense – the horns used are vintage pieces, sometimes dating back as far as the 1920s and occasionally showing the wear of all those decades of use.

The horn sits on the wooden base, which also houses the iPhone. Together, they create the acoustic speaker, with no batteries or wires required. The sound utilises the iPhone's speaker and an acoustic chamber in the wooden base, amplifying the sound through the horn for the vintage sound.

£500 is by no means cheap,  but you do get both history and some audio output for your smartphone. Oh yes, a talking point in the house too.
