Not the first to do it, but the We Are Rewind GB-001 boombox is one of the more stylish reworks of a vintage classic.

The GPO Retro Brooklyn boombox has been the go-to gadget for anyone wanting to recreate that 19780s vibe of cranking out the sounds on a street corner. It’s well worth checking out too. However, it now has a good-looking competitor.

You might know the name We Are Rewind from its very cool portable cassette player range that arrived back in 2023. It also made my round-up of the best portable cassette players not long after. But now there’s a big brother.

It’s still in the showing-off stage, with an option on the website to register an interest. But there are details and images showing it off. The GB-001 boombox skips the bright colours of the portable players and opts for a muted black finish, broken up with the occasional hint of colour.

Plenty of speakers within – four in total, with a total output of 104 watts. You can also use this as a Bluetooth speaker, with a 3.5mm jack included. In the modern era, you can forget old-school batteries, as this one is rechargeable.

Of course, it plays cassettes as you would imagine, with the device also offering its now noise reduction system, the option to record, twin backlit VU meters, support for Type I and Type II cassettes, plus various controls to tweak the sound. What it doesn’t have is a radio. If that’s a deal breaker, maybe look elsewhere.

But if you just want something for your cassettes, have a look at this. You can register your interest now at the website, with the price likely to be around £379.
