Mai ’68 – extremely limited edition book of the Paris 1968 street posters

Mai_68

Regular readers will recall our fascination with the posters from the Hayward Gallery’s May 68: Street Posters from the Paris Rebellion exhibition, which were available in very limited numbers from the Keep Calm Gallery back in April. Well, if you missed out there and have a grand to spare, we have just the thing.

Mai ’68 is the official book of the exhibition. But it’s not just your average catalogue. Oh no, this a seriously limited edition hardback book featuring all 40 of the poster designs shown in the exhibition. Each page is perforated, so you can pull out your favourites and frame them up. Or you can just keep it safe – this is only going to go up in value.

Just 68 of these available and only via Paul Smith, which is selling each one with a certificate of authenticity. Just as well – you don’t want to pay £1,200 for any old rubbish.

Giclee

We’ve long been fans of the work of People Will Always Need Plates. So far, their illustrations of iconic architecture have adorned mugs, plates, bags and tea towels, but now they are available as giclee prints. It is such a good idea, you wonder why they didn’t think to do it earlier!

You can pick from any of their designs (for example, Brutalist buildings, Trellick Tower, Liverpool icons, Barbican etc) and have it made into a giclee print. There is a choice of 25 colours and you can have it made to any size. Prices range from £40 for an A3 print to £240 for a massive A0 print. Prices for non-standard sizes will be supplied upon request.

“Shoot Yr Idols” Season at ICA

Warholcamera

The ICA hosts a short season of film in August dedicated to art documentaries, entitled “Shoot Yr Idols”.

The inspiration for the season is the release of “Face Addict”, where photographer Edo Bertoglio returns to the downtown Manhattan of his past when he was party of Warhol’s Factory crowd. The screening on Tuesday 19th August will include a discussion with Beroglio.

Warhol is featured in another of the films in the series “A Walk into the Sea: Danny Williams and the Warhol Factory”, which focuses on the promising young filmmaker who was Warhol’s lover, but disappeared mysteriously in 1966.

V&A’s Cold War Modern: Design 1945-1970 exhibition

Globe
We’re giving you an early heads-up about this one, just in case you fancy a late summer break in the capital and something to do while you’re there, as the V&A’s Cold War Modern: Design 1945-1970 exhibition looks a real winner.

It’s mid-century plus, covering the era and beyond, the rise of consumerism and art and design from both east and west. Works by Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso and Asger Jorn will be included in the art, while the architecture and design will include Eames, the Smithsons, Le Corbusier and Buckminster Fuller. There’s also ceramics, textiles, metalwork and print works, a look at urban projects of the era and indeed films of the period.

It runs from 25th September 2008 – 11th January 2009 – and no doubt, we’ll see  few interesting bits and pieces in the V&A Shop in conjunction with it. We’ll certainly keep you posted on those.

Barcelona Design Dalilips – Salvador Dali-inspired outdoor sofa

Dalips

Not just a sofa, but a sofa with a heritage and a sofa you can use outdoors – the Barcelona Design Dalilips sofa.

This is a modern-day update of Salvador Dali’s famous red lips sofa, apparently inspired by Dali’s painting of Mae West and specifically, her lips in that image. That art-based fantasy was later turned into a sofa by French designer Jean-Michel Frank and Spanish designer Oscar Tusquets (in 1972), but only became commercially available from 2002.

This most-recent version from Barcelona Design is made of a durable spin-moulded polyurethane for outdoor use, with a choice of colours from the famous red through to monochrome black and white. Not cheap though – expect to pay £1,610 for this piece of art history.

New Keep Calm retro prints – If You Can’t Stand The Heat and Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining

Keepcalm_new

The craze for vintage-styled artwork based around old phrases continues, with the Keep Calm Gallery launching two new prints around two old pieces of advice –  If You Can’t Stand The Heat and Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining.

Both are the work of Lucas and Hayley, as well as being hand-pulled screenprints, printed on 100 per cent recycled off-white paper. And both are exactly the same size – 23.4 x 16.5 inches.

No word on these being limited editions, so we’ll presume not. You can pick either up for £18.
