1970s Decimalisation Posters

DECIMAL_3(1)

Whatever else I might love about the past, the old monetary systems isn’t one of them and decimilisation has never seemed like anything but a good idea. So I would be quite happy to celebrate “going decimal” with one of these original 1970s Decimalisation Posters.

These posters are from 1971 and were used to warn London Underground and bus users that they would now longer be able to use their old denominations of money. They are the genuine article, having been stored away somewhere for nearly 40 years.

Sold framed in white frame, there is currently a special offer where you can buy all three variations together for £150 or buy one for £65 (still half of the usual price). If either offer appeals, you need to visit Retrophenia to buy.

July 1966 Tax Disc Mug

015020_JUL66_LS4_CIA_0085

World Cup fever is taking over the web, but we’ll keep our coverage here to the strictly nostalgic, as with this July 1966 Tax Disc Mug.

The significance of the date is, of course, England’s historic (and unlikely to be repeated anytime soon0 World Cup win, when they beat Germany 4-2. If you needed that explanation of the date then this product probably isn’t for you, but the same seller also has more mugs with other culturally significant dates. Choose from May 1977 (Star Wars released at the cinema), June 1976 (heatwave in Britain) and August 1963 (the Great Train Robbery).

The mugs cost £9 from Retrophenia’s shop on Not on the High Street.

Retro Mini Cushion

Minicushion

The appeal of this retro Mini Cushion is in its simplicity.

Rather than the typical red, white and blue union jack colours that these designs normally favour, the cushion is plain white with the mini reproduced as a line drawing. The outline is given a stitch effect to add a bit of extra interest to the design. The cushion is a 45cm square, made from a cotton mix and filled with feathers.

It costs just under £25 from Dwell.

SodaStream Genesis Drinks Maker

SodaStream-Genesis-Drinks-Maker-Red

If you were a child in the early 80s, it is likely that you will remember SodaStreams with a certain fondness. Once a feature of most homes, I haven’t seen one for some time, but they seem to be making a bit of comeback.  Home Temptations currently has several machines a wide variety of the syrup mixes available.

Pictured here is the SodaStream Genesis Drinks Maker in red which is probably the model that retains the most retro look.  It costs just under £60 and is also available in grey.  The selection of syrups with which to flavour your fizzed water includes cola, lemon-lime and ginger ale, all priced £4.49, although the sample pack of 12 flavours for £10 is perhaps the best way to reintroduce yourself with the wonderful world of homemade drinks.

Visit Home Temptations for full details.
