Mermaid Folk Art Lampshade

MermaidblueLush Designs are design duo Marie Rodgers and Maria Livings. Their products are distinguished by a love of colourful and quirky prints and they produce a great line in lampshades.

The Mermaid Lampshade is a recent addition to the range and this print is very much in the style of Scandinavian folk art, featuring bizarre images of mermaids, storks and trees. It is available in a choice of colours (turquoise, orange, cream or grey) and three sizes, which can be changed to suit either a pendant or a lamp. Prices range from £24 to £48.

Visit the Lush Designs website to see the range.

Miroslav Sasek’s “This is” Books

Thisisbooks

Czech artiist Miroslav Sasek was inspired to create children’s guides to famous cities around the world by a visit to Paris. “This is Paris” is the first the in his wonderful “This is” series of books, which was first released in 1959, followed by the “This is London” in the same year, with other titles added throughout the 1960s.

Each book presents the sights of the city as a child might see it, beautifully illustrated in Sasek’s colourful quirky style, with just a few witty words of explanation.

In total he produced 18 books and 10 of those have been re-issued in recent years. Most of the titles are available to buy on Amazon and they make a great series to collect for keen travellers as well as children.  More information on Miroslav Sasek can be found on this website dedicated to his work.

Ella Doran’s Stacks and Stripes range

Edstacksstripes

It has been difficult to resist the convenience of modern music formats, but still MP3s and the like will still never have the aesthetic appeal of vinyl and certainly won’t inspire designs such as Ella Doran’s Stacks and Stripes range.

The “Stacks and Stripes” pattern is a photograph of a pile of 12” record sleeves and the design has been put onto a range of products. It has been used on Ella Doran’s first ever wallpaper, which is available with the pattern in the middle on the sides. It costs £110 for a 53cm by 10 metres long roll.

If you have stacks of your own vinyl in your home, you may find having a similar print on your walls a bit much, in which case a cushion, tray, table mat or mug might more appropriate.

Visit the Ella Doran website to buy.

Artarchmagazine

This is something for the serious design enthusiast only.

It is limited to 5000 numbered copies and costs £400 (hence the warning above), but it is sure to give a fascinating insight into the designs and ideas of the period.

It is available to order online from Amazon.
