Kitchen Devils Retro Knife Block

KnifeblockThe design of the knife block is not something that I imagine has changed much over the last century and they tend to be functional rather than stylish. The Kitchen Devils Retro Knife Block claims to be retro because of the attractive curved design of the wooden block, rather than being filled with old unsharpened knives!

However, for once it is not the retro style that is this product’s biggest selling point – that would be the price. Previously on sale in selected Debenhams’ stores for £100, it has now been reduced to just £30. For that bargain price, you get five stainless steel, dishwasher-safe knives and the block.

It can be bought online from the Debenhams’ website.

Freud Living Retro Espresso Cups

1080Freud Living Retro Espresso Cups are made from Stoke-on-Trent’s finest china, but their style is pure Italian retro.

They are available in a choice of five colours, with the black, brown or cream options being the most stylish (the pink and blue are a bit too much like baby shades for my tastes).

Their design allows them to be stacked easily. They are sold in pairs for £16.95, but if you want four, you can get your second pair of just £13.95 more.

To view the range visit the Freud Living website.

1960s Japanese Fashion Dolls

JapansefashiondollsBrighton-based vintage shop, Take Me Home, currently has a small selection of 1960s Japanese Fashion Dolls for sale.

Like other cult dolls from that period, they have big eyes and a neutral expression (none of Barbie’s eagar to please white smile).  But the most charming feature is of course their clothing.  These are seriously stylish dolls.

They stand between 41 and 49 cm high and are in various conditions.  Prices are between £45 and £60 per doll.  Contact Take Me Home for further details.

Herbert Terry and Sons Cube Light

CubelightI don’t know much about the origin of this Herbert Terry and Sons Cube Light.  I haven’t been able to find a date for it.  The company have a heritage that goes back at least as far as the 1930s, but looking at this design, I think it is safe to assume that this comes from a later period.

The cube is made from black perspex.  Nestled inside is an orange metal spherical light that can be tilted vertically to direct the light.

It is for sale for £75 on the Spirografica website.
