“A Century of Chairs” Online Exhibition

59_6Whilst nothing can beat the experience of visiting an exhibition in person, it isn’t always possible for a variety of reasons, namely time, money or location, but online exhibitions are overcoming those obstacles, bringing displays to wider audiences. A good example is the Design Museum’s current online exhibition ‘A Century of Chairs’.

Not only would you have had be in London and pay an admission fee to see the real-life exhibition, you would have had to have done this in 2004 when the exhibition took place. But for those of you who missed out, there is now the chance to see it online. As its name suggests, the exhibition follows the trends in design and manufacture of chairs from the late 1800s to the start of the 21st Century. There are clear photographs of the best known chairs from each decade along with informative text.

To visit the exhibition, go to the Design Museum website.   Its free, you can go anytime you want and you want have to face crowds of tourists either!

Architectural Masterpieces Colouring Book

Colouring

Like bouncy castles and park swings, colouring books are ordinarily the preserve of children, not the done thing once you get above a certain but secretly something we’d probably still like to do from time to time.

People Will Always Need Plates have found a solution to this with their Architectural Masterpieces Colouring Book. Featuring outlines of their 23 favourite buildings, ranging from mansions to tower blocks, it provides a rather grown-up topic for colouring, certainly not one for the children.

It costs £5 and can be ordered from their website.

Typeseat Poster

Tim_fishlock_500Following on from the Modernist Flashcards featured yesterday, here is another quirky take on the alphabet – the Typeseat Poster.

Set on a black background, each letter is represented by a white chair. The O is Ball Chair, the C is a tilted Egg Chair, others are less obvious to spot and some are turned upside down and twisted around to form their letters.

The poster is a limited edition silkscreen print by Tim Fishlock and can be bought for £35 from TwentyTwentyOne.

Retro Camera Cups

LeicamugRetro camera decorated products seem to be big at the moment and whilst aprons and necklaces aren’t going to appeal to everyone, these Retro Camera Cups should be more people’s cup of tea (if you’ll excuse the pun).

Made by Circa Ceramics, whose decorative tiles we featured a few months ago, each cup holds 12 oz, has an old-fashioned handle and is finished with a glossy glaze. They are available with either Leica or Starmite camera pictures for you to choose from and the colours available vary.

To view cups currently available or place an order, visit Circa Ceramics on Etsy.

‘M is for Modern’ Flash Cards

S170The idea of flashcard is normally to teach children the alphabet, but your little ones would need to be pretty advanced to learn their ABCs using the ‘M is for Modern’ Flash Cards.

Instead of the usual A is for Apple, B is for Bicycle etc, the cards in this set objects and ideas from modernism, for example A is for A-frame, B is for Bauhaus, and C is for Constructivist. Each card uses iconic graphics and colours good enough to be framed as art.

They are available in the UK exclusively at Showhome priced £14, but are also available in the USA from Smithsonian Institution in New York and SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Christopher Radko Glass Decorations

1088_2 Christopher Radko’s Glass Decorations are about as far removed from the oh-so-tasteful minimalism offered by many contemporary designers. His decorations are a riot of colour and wit, and are based on the traditional decorations from his childhood in Poland.

Pictured here is a Beetle decorating in psychedelic daisies but there are other designs available including a snowman and a clock, each one hand-blown.

Prices start from £37 which is more than your average tree decoration but these are highly collectable pieces. They are available now from Design Shop UK
