KnollStudio Sample Sale – bag some mid-century bargains

Tulip_plat
Looking for some classic design at knockdown prices? You need to make your way to the KnollStudio Sample Sale at the showroom in Smithfield, London.

It takes place on Saturday, 6th December 2008, running from 10am until 1pm. Not much of a clue as to what will be available, but as Knoll is the sole licensed manufacturer of the likes of the Barcelona Chair, Wassily Chair and the Saarinen Tulip and Bertoia Collections, you could have some iconic pieces of furniture at ‘greatly reduced prices’ by Christmas. The only difference is that these are ex display and photoshoot samples, so if you can deal with a few fingerprints, get in there.

And if you get in there early enough, you could pick up the ‘star buy’ of a Black Leather Barcelona Chair for £750 – well worth missing a couple of hours sleep for.

Patrick Schuur Cassette Tape Closet – made of old tapes

Cassette_closet

Clever design with a distinctly retro vibe – the Cassette Tape Closet by Patrick Schuur.

It’s described as a ‘project’ (which might mean it isn’t available), but when it does hit the market, you can pick up a large storage unit packed with 918 vintage cassettes (yes, real ones) fixed to the wooden exterior, creating an item that’s part art and part functional design.

If you want to get your name down for one (or just want to find out how much this unique item will cost), get in touch via the website.

For sale: 1970s-designed house on Lakeside Drive, Esher, Surrey

Lake1

It’s not called ‘Lakeside’ by accident – this 1970s-designed house on Lakeside Drive, Esher, Surrey is right on the water.

Which is great if you like that kind of thing, probably slightly less enticing if your swimming isn’t up to scratch. The house as one of a group designed in 1975 by renowned architect Royston Summers. And it certainly screams the era, that glass and brick combination something you’ll love or hate.

Puma 1970s Easy Rider trainers reissued

Puma_easyrider

The word ‘trainers’ doesn’t seem to do justice to the Puma Easy Rider. In its day, it was a cutting-edge running shoe.

And that day was 1978. 30 years on and these rugged shoes are back on the market, packing those same rugged soles for running in the wilds – or just jogging to the local shop in the winter.

The shoes have a lightweight nylon underlay, with suede detailing and two lace options. They’ve also been slightly ‘distressed’, just so everyone thinks they’re original I suspect. Pre-order them no for late October delivery, price is around £55 for any of the colourways.

Shell 1960s LM Driver’s Bag

Shell_drivers

You may remember we featured the Jochen Rindt 1960s Shell LM jacket a couple of weeks back. Well, now there’s a matching bag – the Shell 1960s LM Driver’s Bag.

Like the jacket, this is inspired by Jochen Rindt’s victory at the 1965 Le Mans 24hr race in a Ferrari 275 LM (hence the name), offering a luxurious travel holdall in ‘true to period’ Nappa PVC and suede, featuring a double zip closure, inner zip pocket, label holder, full lining and vintage logos.

You can bag one for £179.

Maria Rivens retro-inspired artwork

Colour

We’re always on the look out for contemporary artists with a retro twist – and that certainly includes Maria Rivens.

You can check out her work at both the gallery and online presence of Brighton’s Ink’d Gallery. You’ll find collage-like art inspired by the 40s and 50s films she watched as a child, with a bit of sci-fi and the modern day thrown in for good measure. Indeed, these 3D-style pictures aren’t a million miles away from the work Peter Blake is currently producing – and with the same attention to detail.

You can check out the full range of work online at Ink’d, but as an example, the one-off Colour Of Love above is sized at 34 x 44cm and is available to buy for £630.
