Stelton’s Arne Jacobsen-designed Press coffee maker

Jacobsen_press

A fairly modern design, but with a look rooted firmly in 1930s modernism – the Stelton Press coffee maker.

It’s the work of iconic designer Arne Jacobsen, stylish enough to show off, but functional too – press down that plunger to prepare your ground coffee, which is kept warmer for longer via the double-walled casing.

It holds a litre of your favoured brew, selling for £145.

Nomad Traveler – portable 1930s-style iPod speaker with radio

Nomad

When it comes to looks, the Nomad Traveler is a definite winner.

Those looks are based on a 1930s radio – and indeed there is an AM/FM radio packed into that wood and tweed casing, with electronic tuning via the retro dial on the front. But its main purpose is as a portable, full-range iPod speaker, with connectivity on the back for your MP3 player and 4x AA batteries (or mains) for power.

Exclusive to Urban Outfitters (and quite possibly, the US site only), it retails for $72 (around £36).

Roberto Menghi 1960s Globo di Luci pendant light

Globo

Another lighting gem from the 1960s gets the reissue treatment – the Roberto Menghi Globo di Luci pendant light.

Designed back in 1968 and now available once more via Fontana Arte, this globe-shaped hanging light isn’t a million miles from the stuff Tom Dixon is currently producing – a blown glass globe in silver, gold or red with aluminium internal reflector and chrome plated ceiling rose.

Which all adds up to a timeless light with a lot of style and plenty of brightness. Three sizes available (small, medium and large), with prices starting at £211.

For sale: Falling Water – 1973-designed modernist house in Jesmond Park West, Newcastle

Jesmond1_2

Words sometimes mean nothing – you really have to see the images of Falling Water to appreciate why this house could be your dream 70s home.

Apparently inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and designed by Ronald Chipchase & Partners for Newcastle scrap metal millionare Freddie Sheperd, it’s an ostentatious show of wealth almost frozen in time – from the stylish modernist exterior and generous gardens through to the authentic 1970s fittings, many last seen in the better home magazines and books of the period.
