Onitsuka Tiger launches trainer vending machine on Carnaby Street

Onitsuka_vending

If the Onitsuka Tiger store off Carnaby Street is closed, you can now pick up some of its retro-styled trainers from a nearby vending machine.

The machine can hold up to 24 pairs of trainers at a time, in six different sizes and is available to use from Monday 14th to Wednesday 16th April. After that, it will tour round various cities in the UK.

And if you happen to be in the area of the vending machine, you can also win a pair – so it’s worth heading over for a nosey.

Charles & Ray Eames Compact sofa

Eames_compact

Very different from the obvious Eames designs, the Compact sofa is certainly a practical piece of home furnishing.

Originally designed for their own home, this 1954 design is now available from Vitra, offering a bold colour scheme, a lightweight frame, high backrest and an easy sofa to transport – folding up when you need to move it.

Made from a chromed tubular metal frame with polyurethane foam upholstery, it retails for a hefty £4,966.

Penguin reissues George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm with Shepard Fairey sleeves

Orwell1

There’s absolutely no excuse for failing to own George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm. But if you need further encouragement, maybe these Shepard Fairey-designed sleeves will provide it.

We have featured the striking Shepard Fairey (aka Obey) artwork over at Switched On Set – striking retro-styled art that certainly fits Orwell’s politically-inspired classic. Penguin hopes the new covers will give the books a new lease of life – and get them into the hands of today’s book-shy youth.

Both are available from July 3rd, no prices as yet. The cover of Animal Farm can be seen over the page.

Retro Retreat: Samzi UFO Houses in Taiwan

Sanzi

Actually, this isn’t actually a Retro Retreat, more a former retreat – the Samzi UFO Houses in Taiwan.

This amazing space age development was built as a holiday resort in the 1970s, but has since been abandoned for reasons that aren’t clear – possibly financial or a poor climate for vacations.

It seems to be due for demolition in the near future, so a flight to Taiwan to check it out might be too late. But you can check out an amazing Flickr gallery via the link below, showing just about every amazing detail of the development. If only Butlins looked like this…

Gibson offers classic Les Paul and SG guitars with auto-tuning

Gibson_robot

Becoming a rock god just became that little bit easier with the newly-launched Gibson Robot guitars.

An earlier limited edition of the self-tuning guitar sold out in just one day, prompting Gibson to release two new versions, using two if its most iconic guitars – the Robot Les Paul Studio and the Robot SG Special, both sold in this rather interesting shade of purple.

To tune, just strum the guitar – that’s all. On the downside, the guitars are only available for a limited time – so expect high demand and a high price. Which is $3,999 (around £2,000) for the Les Paul and $3,599 (around £1,800) for the SG.
