Roland Edirol MP3 player – looks like an old electric shaver

Roland_mp3
It might look like something out of your dad’s drawer of old rubbish, but you know what? I actually like the Roland Edirol MP3 player.

It’s set to launch in Japan, offering something a million miles away from the iPod and its numerous lookalikes, as well as the ability to record and play back 24-bit audio, an SD/SDHC card slots, a high speed USB 2.0 port, up to 4 hours of recording time, a remote control, built in speakers (the ‘shaver head’ at the top), 70s-style controls and audio software.

No news of a price as yet – or if this will head to the UK.

Turntable Phonograph – radio/alarm shaped like an old record player

Turntable_phonograph

It might look like an old record player, but the Turntable Phonograph can’t actually play your vinyl – but will get you up in the morning.

Available in pink or white, this small and vintage-style gadget offers an FM radio (controlled by the record player’s arm), along with a clock (date/time), an alarm and bizarrely, a thermometer and hygrometer.

All of that is powered by 4x AA batteries, with the Turntable Phonograph retailing for a rather cheap $17 (around £9).

Timo Ripatti space age Ellipse Chair

Eclipse_2

A modern piece with some seriously 60s looks – the Ellipse Chair by Timo Ripatti.

A striking circular design in black and white, it’s said to ‘create its own protective and personal space for its user’. As long as being a comfortable place to park yourself too I presume. The base is made of chromed steel, with the seat made of laminated birch, then upholstered with Gabriel Europost fabric (100% wool).

This Finnish design is available at the Finnish Design Shop – priced at 990 Euros.

Authentic Star Trek Classic Communicator

Star_trek_communicator
Ever feel the urge to wear pointed ears and a tight nylon top? I’m guessing you could be a potential customer for the Star Trek Classic Communicator.

Yes, you can re-enact a vintage sci-fi adventure with some replica Star Trek kit. Flip up the grill and you’ll be greeted with authentic lights and sounds, including a ‘hailing function’ and over 20 sound effects and phrases, including ‘Spock here, Captain’, ‘Scotty here, Captain’, ‘Transporter room ready to beam up’ and…well…just about everything else you might recall from the original TV series.

It’s not very grown up – but it could be a lot of fun. Yours for $29.99 (around £15).

Ole Mathiesen Index watch

Mathieson
Sometimes plain and simple is so much better than all the whistles and bells – as is the case with the Ole Mathiesen Index watch.

Originally introduced in 1962, this new variation has a large silver-plated dial with simple bold graphics and a date display, along with a Swiss quartz ETA movement, stainless-steel case, sapphire crystal and a calfskin leather band.

Sold gift boxed, which is just as well with a price of $800 (around £400).
