Alexander Girard 1970s PlyPrint artwork now available in the UK

Girard1

We featured these back in October 2008, but at the time, the Alexander Girard 1970s PlyPrint artwork was only available to our US readers. Well, now you can pick them up in the UK.

As the name suggests, these are plywood panels, each featuring designs by Alexander Girard that were originally silk screen prints dating back to 1971. The  new versions are hand screen-printed onto sustainably-harvested maple plywood panels using water based inks, all with the Girard signature.

Sold with mounting kit, you can pre-order the panels now (for March delivery) via SCP, sized at 36 x 36cm and retailing for £76. A set of smaller panels featuring the 'Love' image is also available for £34.99. See over for another image.

Bauhaus bird house

Bauhaus_bird

The French House
does a nice line in quirky bird houses, but our favourite has got to be the Bauhaus bird house.

Yes, this is a modernist home for your feathered friends, offering something more functional and minimalist in a 1930s-style.

And if the birds don't like it, you'll still have one of the coolest birdhouses on the block to show off Not badly priced either, yours for £34.95.

60s-style Comet Chair by Johanson Design

Comet_chair

A modern design with its inspiration in the 1960s – the Comet Chair by Johanson Design.

The work of Team Johanson, the seat offers that  space age seat with a plywood frame and foam padding, covered with a choice of fabric, vinyl, leather or suede. And it's all completed by the Tulip-style base, pictured here in chrome, but also available in a selection of colours.

With so many options, pricing is a bit vague, but expect to pay something around the £700 mark for a chair like the one above.

Bialetti Moka Express – 1930s stove-top espresso maker

Moka

Design classics don't have to cost the earth, you can pick up the Bialetti Moka Express for under £16.

It's the original (and still the most popular) stove-top espresso maker on the market, the work of Alfonso Bialetti back in the 1930s, this hexagonal pot is alleged to be in over 90 per cent of Italian homes. The reason for its popularity? Well, to quote the designer, you can make coffee just like you'll find in a bar 'without requiring any ability whatsoever'.

And that's still the case today. The machine is easy to use and easy to clean (it has self-cleaning valves). But best of all, you can use it on just about any type of stove or hob. Take your pick from a three-cup, six-cup or nine-cup model, with prices starting at £15.95, rising to £24.95 for the largest model. Oh yes, looks great on a shelf too.
