Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi-inspired Gloss Pendant Lights

Light

This isn't strictly a design classic, but the Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi-inspired Gloss Pendant Lights are based on one, specifically the 1969 Bowling table light by the previously-mentioned designers.

That particular design was an early spot of recycling, the two designers using a headlight from a scrapped Fiat 666 lorry for the actual light, adding a coloured back and support for the finishing touch. Indeed, if you want to see the original, see over the page for an image. These updates use the same 'headlight' look for a pendant light, adding a black or white gloss finish, chrome trim, 2m of flex and an included halogen bulb.

Two designs available (as above), with prices from £75, dependent on size.

1950s-influenced Starburst Mirror

Starburst

We featured the Graham and Green Sunburst Mirror some time back, which was eye-catching and authentic, but rather pricey. The Starburst Mirror is a slightly more modern take in the same look, for a fraction of the price.

It's got the same shooting arms and central mirror, only this time the Starburst Mirror has black metal 'arms' and chrome disc detailing, the mirror measuring around six inches. No size for the entire thing, but you can probably work in out in proportion to the centre.

That price? Just £19.99.

eBay watch: 1960s Patrice Dupont-designed Philips UFO portable record player

Ufo

A stunning design that rarely comes up on eBay – so make sure you get a bid in for this Patrice Dupont-designed Philips UFO portable record player if you want one.

One of the space age classics to have appeared in the equally sought-after  L'utopie Du Tout Plastique book/catalogue, it's a battery-operated record player with built-in speaker, taking the shape of a flying saucer.

Described as in 'used but good condition', it's currently at £78. I suspect it might go for a little more in the end.

Robin Day Polo barstools

Day_stool

If someone asked us to name an affordable design classic, the first thing we would say is likely to be the Robin Day Polo Chair. Designed back in 1973, it was the world's first indoor/outdoor polpropylene chair, complete with an eye-catching and timeless appeal, not to mention being very useful. So it's no surprise to hear that we also like the Robin Day Polo barstools.

Based on the original 1973 design, this variation isn't a million miles away from the standard chair, only this time there's the added height of the chrome frame – the seat part is identical. And like the standard Polo, it's available in a seemingly endless range of colours (not just the pink above).

More expensive than the £49 chair, the barstool will set you back £89, which still keeps it in that 'affordable' bracket.

Dwell 60s-style high gloss dining table

Dwell_dining

Another gem from the forthcoming Dwell range, this 60s-style high gloss dining table.

Loving that cone base, round surface and of course, the high gloss black exterior, which is likely to be both eye-catching and a magent for fingerprints.

The table is able to accomodate four people, sized around 74cm high, with a diameter of 120cm. New in this week, priced at £399.

Gherkin tile by ATADesigns at The Look Boutique

Tile_Gherkin_ATAD5632

The Look Boutique, whose previous focus has been selling new fashion and accessory designers, has just launched an interiors collection. The collection includes decadent looking armchairs and chandeliers, but the collection from ATADesigns – including these Gherkin tiles – is probably of most interest to Retro To Go readers.

The tiles are based on a very contemporary building: Norman Foster's 30 St Mary Axe, of course otherwise known as the Gherkin. However, the geometric patterning and colour scheme means when several are placed together they have a distinct retro feel and a unique look. Each tile costs £11 but there is a minimum order of a pack of six tiles.
