Comet_chair

A modern design with its inspiration in the 1960s – the Comet Chair by Johanson Design.

The work of Team Johanson, the seat offers that  space age seat with a plywood frame and foam padding, covered with a choice of fabric, vinyl, leather or suede. And it's all completed by the Tulip-style base, pictured here in chrome, but also available in a selection of colours.

With so many options, pricing is a bit vague, but expect to pay something around the £700 mark for a chair like the one above.

Bialetti Moka Express – 1930s stove-top espresso maker

Moka

Design classics don't have to cost the earth, you can pick up the Bialetti Moka Express for under £16.

It's the original (and still the most popular) stove-top espresso maker on the market, the work of Alfonso Bialetti back in the 1930s, this hexagonal pot is alleged to be in over 90 per cent of Italian homes. The reason for its popularity? Well, to quote the designer, you can make coffee just like you'll find in a bar 'without requiring any ability whatsoever'.

And that's still the case today. The machine is easy to use and easy to clean (it has self-cleaning valves). But best of all, you can use it on just about any type of stove or hob. Take your pick from a three-cup, six-cup or nine-cup model, with prices starting at £15.95, rising to £24.95 for the largest model. Oh yes, looks great on a shelf too.

Ilmari Tapiovaara mid-century TT40 table

Tt40

As the name suggests, the TT40 table by Ilmari Tapiovaara was designed almost 70 years ago, but still impresses today.

1940 was the year, with Tapiovaara combining a top of birch plywood with a frame of solid birch to produce a side table that's both functional and eye-catching – especially if you love curves.

Today it's been reissued in almost exact detail, with a choice of finishes including the natural one above and a glossy black one. Both sell online for the same price, 820 Euros, which is around  £728.

Vintage Hovis tin planters

Hovis

We're all for recycling, especially when it looks as good as this vintage Hovis tin planter.

The tins are indeed old baking tins, used in the Hovis factory during the 1960s. Now they're getting a new life as heavyweight planters, particularly good for your indoor herbs I imagine. Or if you're into baking, you can still use them for that too.

Limited numbers, selling for £17.50.

Deadgood mid-century-style Love armchair

Love_chair

Nice to see another piece of modern design that's every bit as stylish as the mid-century classics – as this Deadgood Love armchair certainly is.

A classic 50s-style shape, the chair has an oak frame, a generous 'wing-style' back and upholstery in 100 per cent wool. That name is no accident either – look closely and you'll see that wool covering also features four hearts as detailing, making it the perfect Valentine's gift, should you have won the Lotto last week.

For the rest of us, it's saving up time, with the Love armchair selling for just under £900.

“Teme e Variazioni” Wallpaper

Temawallpaper

You may remember the Piero Fornasetti 'Tema e Variazioni' design from a collection of plates we mentioned a while back. Now the distinctive design has turned up as a series of wallpapers.

Available from Interiors Europe, there are three variations (for want of a better word) of the design available. The one pictured here is the simplest, dominated by the woman’s face. The others are rather more surreal; the woman’s face appearing on a street and the woman’s neck adorned with a necklace made up of small versions of the face.

An iconic design though it is, the obvious question is whether you could live with it on a daily basis? If you can, then it will set you back £65 per roll from Interiors Europe.
