Ilmari Tapiovaara 1950s Trienna coffee table

Trienna2

A stylish piece of 1950s mid-century design that's back on the market in 2009 – the Ilmari Tapiovaara Trienna coffee table.

Tapiovaara designed the table back in 1954, using natural birch plywood for those curves, then covered with a veneer of walnut or a stained in black or white.

Still looking ahead of its time over 50 years on, it's certain to stay that way for a number of years yet. It retails from 915 Euros, which is around £800.

String 60 – 60th anniversary String shelving unit

String60

As you may already know, we're huge fans of the mid-century String shelving system, both for its looks and its affordability – you can build it up as space and cash permits. But what you might not know is that String is 60 years old – and that fact fact is celebrated with a limited edition, String 60.

And it really is something special. To celebrate 60 years since Nisse Strinning designed the first units, Swedish designer Mats Theselius has given it a makeover. Thankfully he hasn't tampered with a classic, instead he's taken it high-end, producing limited edition 'pocket' shelves in gold plate and palisander.

Each of the 600 units is individually numbered with a commemorative plaque and each contains two side panels in gold plate and three palisander shelves. It's not as cheap as the standard versions obviously, but at £290, it's still one of the cheapest collector's pieces you'll see for quite some time.

1970s Pony by Eeero Aarnio

Pony

Over on Switched On Set, we've just featured the latest version of the Eero Aarnio Puppy. Which got me thinking that we've never featured the inspiration behind it – the Pony by Eeero Aarnio, designed back in 1973.

The Pony was (and still is) part toy and part child's seat, with a moulded foam body, feet and ears, all connected by a tube frame and upholstered with stretch fabric. And as well as being something for your kids to climb all over, it's a bona fide design classic you can show off to your family and friends.

Still in production today, you can pick up the Pony by Eeero Aarnio for a not inconsiderable £2,795.

Pierre Paulin 1960s Le Chat lounge chair

Lechat

You don't need me to tell you that this is a chair from the 60s – the upholstery on the Pierre Paulin Le Chat lounge chair already says it.

Dating back to 1967, the Le Chat is quirky, but it's actually designed for your body – with those curves offering plenty of support for your curves, with the cushioned frame also offering a comfortable place to relax.

You don't need to go for the swirly design, plain options are available too. But somehow they don't quite hit the mark in the same way. No matter what fabric you go for, the price is the same – just over £1,300.

House of Fraser Sputnik-style Icicle pendant light

Icicle

Reminiscent of the mid-century Sputnik light, this House of Fraser Icicle pendant light replaces the arms and balls for something a little more icy.

A chrome centre holds all of those moulded clear glass 'Icicle' arms, shooting out like an explosion. But unlike the Sputnik, this particular light needs just one bulb for illumination -  a 20W low voltage capsule bulb.

Not cheap at £172.50, but it's actually in the sale right now, having previously been £345. So something of a bargain.
