Fortuny Moda floor lamp

Fortuny

Quite possibly the oldest piece of design we’ve featured on Retro To Go, the Fortuny Moda floor lamp is now just over 100 years old.

Designed by Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo in1907, the Moda is reminiscent of large photography studio lights, guaranteed to create a talking point in any room. And plenty of light too – a whopping 500w bulb sits within that adjustable cotton ‘shade’, all standing upright on a tubular steel frame with powder finish.

Various colours and shade decorations available, with prices starting at around £2,600.

EcoSmart Retro freestanding fire

Retro_flueless

It’s cold outside and if you don’t want to whack the heating on, you could go for something portable – like this EcoSmart Retro freestanding fire.

Loving the 70s-style looks and period orange colour scheme, but that’s where retro ends – all the inner workings are very modern. Freestanding, with no need for gas, electricity or special ventilation, you just need to add the eco-friendly bio ethanol fuel and you’re away – a single refill will burn for between 7 and 20 hours.

Safe too, with the flames and steel interior protected by a front windscreen in safety glass and the frame not likely to get too warm. We’d buy one tomorrow, but for one thing – the price. You’re looking at £5,725, but you might make some of it back in fuel savings.

Verner Panton 1960s Seashell chandelier

Seashell

If your ceilings are high enough for a light feature, you might want to check out the Verner Panton Seashell chandelier.

Designed by Panton in 1964, it’s as much a piece of art as a piece of functional design, a wooden ceiling plate dropping down chains of metal rings, each decorated with mother of pearl discs. And somewhere within all of that is a 100w bulb providing both light and lighting effect.

The height is 110cm, so check your space before you buy. And your bank balance –  it’s priced at a whopping £6,850.08.

Artifort 1960s C683 sofa

C683

Looking every bit the contemporary seat, this Artifort C683 sofa is actually a 40-year-old design.

Yes, designed back in 1968 by Kho Liang Le, the C683 was created with comfort and simplicity in mind – a frame of pressed beech is upholstered with moulded foam, sat on a very ‘now’ metal frame and covered with a choice of coloured fabric or leather.

A timeless classic and yours for around £2,800.

It might look like a refugee from the 1970s, but this Pierre Paulin Globe lounge chair actually dates from 1959.

Reissued by Artifort, the Globe lounge chair just screams ‘Bond villain’, with a disc aluminium base and stand for spinning around and a luxurious fabric finish, shaped very much for comfort.

Take your pick from a wide range of colours, with the chair selling for just over £1,500, the ottoman coming in for around £600.
