Michelle Mason 1930s-inspired tote bags and cushions for Transport for London

Tfl1

Transport for London has collared a number of hot designers to create something new and useful using the London Transport archive – and these Michelle Mason Colindale tote bags and cushions certainly fit the brief.

At first glance, they might look quite contemporary, but that leaf motif (Colindale) was originally created for London Transport by Marion Dorn back in the 1930s, adding a classic twist and a talking point to a pair of everyday items.

The bags retail for £14.99, while the cushions sell for £19.99. See an image of the latter over the page.

Ercol Originals in Black range launches

Ercol1

Ercol still produces some of its mid-century gems under the Ercol Originals label – but has made a concession to the modern era with its Ercol Originals in Black range.

Essentially it’s a reissue of key designs from the 1950s, but in a more ‘modern’ matt black finish (as opposed to the more natural look of the standard range). Take your pick of items like the Nest of Tables above, the Love Seat and Windsor dining table (both pictured over the page), all dating from 1956.

You can order all online, but prices aren’t cheap – you’re looking at £525 for the Nest of Tables, with the Windsor dining table selling for £875. See the website for the full range.

Matthew Hilton mid-century Cross sideboard

Cross

A modern piece with a serious influence from the past – the Matthew Hilton Cross sideboard for Case.

This 50s-influenced sideboard is made of solid oak (with natural or stained finish), packing in three drawers and a large double-doored storage area, not to mention a spacious top for your vintage glass or audio system. Loving those angled legs too.

Available online at SCP, it retails from £1,450.

Hans Bolling 1950s wooden ducks

Bolling_ducks

If you like the Kay Bojesen monkey range (and indeed the elephants), the Hans Bolling wooden ducks could well be your thing too.

Bolling designed the ducks back in 1959, based on a famous image of a Danish policeman stopping traffic to let a duck family cross the road. The result is a stylish mid-century object (or objects) made of teak, cool and quirky and guaranteed to brighten up any room.

Now reissued as part of the Architect Made series, you can pick them up in two sizes, with prices starting at £34.

Lighthouse Vitra Furniture Packs

Furniturepacks

Vitra is the manufacturer behind some of the most iconic pieces of design and I for one wouldn’t object to a home furnished entirely in Vitra products. This is pretty much what the Lighthouse is offering with their Vitra Furniture Packs.

The store has gathered together some of Vitra’s best products into a choice of 3 packs, each consisting of 17 different items which is enough to kit out your lounge, study, hallway and dining room. Items include chairs shelving by Eames, desk, bench and clocks by George Nelson and lighting and tables by Noguchi.

The least expensive pack (which is by no means cheap) costs £10,500, which is still a saving on the £13,010 it would cost to buy the products individually. The other packages cost £14,250 and £20,500 and represent similar savings. If you have the budge and are looking for a complete furniture package, visit

The Lighthouse website for full details of what each pack contains.

Alexander Girard PlyPrint artwork

Girard_ply

We love the mid-century imagery of Alexander Girard, so we’ll be looking to getting some of the Alexander Girard PlyPrint artwork on our walls.

As the name suggests, this is artwork on wood – 14-inch x 14-inch plywood panels to be exact, all sustainably harvested as you would expect. Each design is hand screen printed onto the panels, complete with that instantly-recognisable Girard signature.

A number of classic designs available (see the site for all), with the PlyPrints sold with all the mounting kit you’ll need to get them on display. Each is priced at $89.
