The Djinn chairs and sofas were used in the Space Station scenes in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was designed by Olivier Mourgue for the French company Airborne earlier in the 1960s.

Airbourne no longer exists but some authentic Djinn products are still around. At the moment, 20th Century Marks has various pieces available, including this sofa, a chaise, a chair without arms and stools. They are available in various colours, and have all been reupholstered.

If you would like to recreate that iconic look in your lounge, visit 20th Century Marks for further information.

Cherner retro dining table

Cherner

On first impressions, it might look like a mid-century piece, but the Cherner dining table is actually a modern design.

The work of Benjamin Cherner and available in round, rectangular or oval shapes, with Aalto-like curved legs, these US-made tables are available in walnut or beech and designed to go with the equally stylish Cherner side chairs or armchairs.

This kind of stye doesn’t come cheap though – prices start at £1,637 for the dining tables, while the chairs start at £550. Just think of it as an investment in a future design classic.

Deptford Project Cafe – built from a 1960s train carriage

Deptford

Quirky design or a clever piece of recycling? Take your pick for the Deptford Project Cafe.

Newly-opened on Deptford High Street, it’s the first step in a project to completely regenerate the area around Deptford Train Station. The cafe is the work of designer Morag Myerscough, with help from architects Richard Rogers and Alison Brooks, converting a 35 tonne 1960s South East Trains carriage into a coffee bar/eaterie with a very stylish interior and designer fittings (including classic Aalto stools).

All food is home made and the coffee is fair trade. Check it out at 121-123 Deptford High Street, London SE8. It opens seven days a week from 8am.

Zanotta Blow – 1960s inflatable armchair reissued

Zanotta_blow

Inflatable furniture seems to be the thing this year – we’ve already seen the Branex Quasar range reissued and now we have the return of the Zanotta Blow armchair.

The Blow armchair was the work of De Pas, D’Urbino and Lomazzi back in 1967 – very much a sign of the times, it was hit with the swinging 60s crowd for its looks and functionality.

The new version is much the same as the original, made of ‘electronically welded’ clear, yellow or red PVC and good for both indoor and outdoor use and in most temperatures. A pump is supplied, with each chair selling for £344.
