Designer vs high street – Verner Panton Fun Lamp and Marks & Spencer Capiz Beaded Ceiling Light

Pantoncopy

Although there’s no mention in the product description that the Marks & Spencer Capiz Beaded Ceiling Light takes inspiration from the Verner Panton Fun Lamp, it’s fairly obvious that this is the case.

Let’s start with the designer light (left). The Fun Lamp was introduced in 1964, with the focal point being those hand-cut mother of pearl (or steel) discs hung from three rings, creating a mirrored globe effect when lit and if there’s a breeze anywhere, a gentle ‘tinkling’ noise. You can pick this particular light up for around £629.

Kashiwado Modern Japanese Chair by Isamu Kenmochi

T71652b

Isamu Kenmochi founded the Japan Industrial Designers Association and collaborated also with Isamu Noguchi on several projects. In 1961, he designed the Kashiwado Modern Japanese Chair, created for a famous sumo wrestler of the same name.

The chair is as much a piece of sculpture as it is a piece of furniture, created by carving out block of Japanese cedar, which has been specifically selected for having the most rings. Each chair takes several weeks to make. It will perhaps be unsurprising then to learn that this is possibly the most expensive chair we’ve featured on this website, costing a staggering $12,400.00 (over £6,000).

If you have that amount to spend on a stylish, but not particularly comfortable looking chair, you can order one from Nova68.

Verner Panton Amoebe Highback chair

Amoebe_highback

We featured the original Verner Panton Amoebe chair some time back, but we haven’t mentioned this slightly more bizarre variation – the Verner Panton Amoebe Highback chair from 1970.

While the original sells itself as a rather stylish space age lounger, the Highback is designed for people who want a bit more privacy – offering a flexible backrest that curves over the head of the sitter for ‘shelter’ and ‘seclusion’, especially if you have an open plan or loft apartment.

Take your pick from a never-ending selection of colours, with the chair retailing for just over £1,200.

Reproduction Artichoke light – at a fraction of the price

Repro_art

Let’s be honest, design classics don’t often come cheap, with the original Poul Henningsen-designed Artichoke light fitting from Louis Poulsen costing anything up to £18,000. If that sounds a bit hefty, maybe this reproduction Artichoke light will fit your budget.

It’s almost identical to the 1958 classic, using overlapping, machine-cut aluminium ‘leaves’ for crisp, glare-free light from 360 degrees.

Sized at 130cm (h) and with a diameter of 60cm, you can choose from a silver, red or black finish, all retailing for £295.

Habitat’s Photographic floor lamps

Photo_habitat

We love a bargain, especially when they’re as stylish as these Photographic floor lamps from Habitat.

Designed by Claire Norcross, the lamps are based on classic ‘photo shoot’ lighting you would find at a pro photographer’s studio. Except these are designed for domestic use, with a rubberised exterior finish and shiny interior to boost the light upwards from the floor.

But best of all, both the black and white version are currently in the sale, retailing for £119.20 each from a previous £149 price tag.

Extra-loud Classic Alarm Clock

Loud_alarm
Struggle to get out of bed in the morning? Even when Chris Moyles comes on? You need the Extra-loud Classic Alarm Clock.

Aside from the obvious benefit of never having to hear a breakfast DJ again, the clock has an extra-loud ring from its bells, which you can switch off (or switch to snooze) by hitting the face. It’s also got that classic/retro look, with hour/minute hands along with a sweeping second hand.

If you want one, it retails for $35 (around £18).
