Al & Jo Classic Piet – Mondrian-inspired storage unit

Mondrian_cabinet

Work of art or functional furniture? With the Al & Jo Classic Piet, you get both.

Al & Jo is an Italian design house, bringing together artists, cabinet makers and engineers to produce items using all of these skills – like the Classic Piet. As the name (and look) suggests, this is inspired by Mondrian’s coloured blocks of the 1920s. But it’s not just about the art – beneath that surface is an MDF storage unit with four drawers and four cabinet areas with Minimax Ferrari hinges, stood on an iron treated stand (for a rust effect).

Just 10 of these are being made, each selling for 5,220 Euros.

Darlings of Chelsea introduce mid-century-inspired Maya armchair

Darlings

It packs all the wooden curves of a mid-century design, but this Maya armchair from Darlings of Chelsea is actually a modern piece.

Designed as a telephone chair – or indeed for anywhere requiring a table/chair, the Maya is handcrafted, with a low back, soft cushioned fabric seat and spiral side table, with a choice of fabric (plain or patterned) available for upholstery and natural, cherry, walnut or wenge available for the chair legs and spiral table.

If I have one reservation, it’s the spiral finish on the table, which looks out of character from the rest of the design – but you can opt not to have one if you wish. Prices are around £330.

Tom Dixon 60s-inspired Mirror Ball Stand

Dixon_mirrorballstand

It looks like it fell from a late 60s design magazine, but this is actually cutting edge lighting – the Tom Dixon Mirror Ball Stand.

The latest addition to Dixon’s Mirror Ball collection (found in Heals and various high-end design stores), the Mirror Ball Stand is described as a ‘sculptural interior lighting tree’, with different-sized balls fixed to a stainless steel stand with industrial strength clamps (to keep everything in place).

Up to six balls can be fixed onto the stand, which is sized at 80 x 180cm. The Mirror Ball Stand is a new launch, so no price available as yet – although it should be available to buy later this year.
