Verner Panton Bar Boy by Vitra

Barboy
Think of a vintage bar and you’ll probably be thinking of a vision of plastic, glass and leather, possibly shaped like a boat. Well, you certainly don’t get with the Verner Panton Bar Boy.

Designed in 1963, but reissued today by Vitra, the Bar Boy is not dissimilar to the Jo Colombo Boby trolley, with four segments that swivel out in different directions, offering both surfaces to serve your drinks, along with storage for your bottles.

It’s constructed from moulded plywood with a high-gloss varnish and metal, with a choice of black and white finish. Unsurprisingly, this isn’t cheap, with a price tag of £1,572.

Sukie’s retro-styled Indian notebooks

Sukie

Something a little different for your jottings – these Indian notebooks from Sukie.

The notebooks have incredibly eye-catching designs, all inspired by notebooks found in markets across India. And to add to the quirkiness, they’re all made by hand, so each one is slightly different or if you like, unique.

The covers are a slightly glossed hardback, with lined pages inside and there’s a good choice of designs available on the website, including the Science and Special featured here. Each one retails for £5.95.

Bauhaus Reviewed 1919-1933 at MIMA

Bauhaus

If you don’t know what MIMA is, it’s the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art. And if you visit the gallery from late November, you can check out Bauhaus Reviewed 1919-1933.

It’s claimed to be the most significant Bauhaus exhibition in the UK in the last 30 years, offering a range of design, furnishings, architectural models and films relating to the German design school, plus new photography of surviving Bauhaus buildings, including the Kandinsky/Klee House in Dessau (pictured above).

The exhibition runs from 23rd November 2007 through to 17th February 2008.

eBay Watch: Dieter Rams Braun design poster

Dieter_rams_poster
A nice mix of art and design on eBay, this Dieter Rams Braun design poster.

I’m presuming it was printed around 1975, with the poster showing designs made by the designer for Braun from 1956 to 1975. Incredibly stylish poster too, an eight-colour offset print with what you would probably call technical images of the hi-fi equipment designed by the man over this period.

Sized at 60 x 84cm and apparently unused, there are a few of them for sale, each currently selling for around £14. Sounds like an absolute bargain, not to mention a shrewd investment.

Laura Ashley Colinton mid-century leather armchair

Ashley_mid
Hunting around the Laura Ashley website dug up this real gem – the Laura Ashley Colinton mid-century leather armchair.

It’s a design that screams the 1950s, with those curves and the dark wood diagonal legs. And it looks a dream to kick back into. The leather is a premium ‘Brandy Antiqued Saddle Clay’, which seems to be like a cream, although there are options for changing to a different shade if you like.

The Colinton is available online or in stores, priced at £800.

Retro-styled metal Barrack lamp

Barrack_lamp
Looking for some industrial-styled design for the home? Well, these retro-styled Barrack lamps might fit the bill – and the price is good too.

They are inspired by the no-nonsense utilitarian industrial design often seen in municipal buildings in days gone by – and still seen today in some places. If you are creating a minimalist look, it could be a nice finishing touch.

Made of enamelled metal, the Barrack lamp is available in retro shades too, including the ‘apple’ shade pictured here. It’s got a diameter of 28cm and sells for a very reasonable £29.99.
