“Labour Saving Hints and Ideas for the Home” Book

LaboursavingWhether it was true or not, the idea prevails that things operated more efficiently in the past. Especially when it came to running a household, it appears that our ancestors at the beginning of the last century knew best. “ Labour Saving Hints and Ideas for the Home” gives you the benefit of that wisdom, handily collected in one book.

Originally published in 1924, it contains over 1,300 tips that were compiled from entries submitted to a competition ran earlier in the decade. Some are amusing, some outdated, but overall most of them do offer sound advice.

It can be picked up from various sellers via Amazon, starting from under £2.

Moose Firelighters

MooseLabour and Wait specialise in old fashioned, high quality practical products, the stuff that it is increasingly difficult to find on the high street. Amongst the brushes, twine and string that makes up much of their stock, we found these rather lovely Moose Firelighters.

Still very much a practical product, being from Sweden, this hasn’t meant a compromise on design. They apparently work effectively and smell good as well.

A book of twelve costs £15 and can be ordered online.

Uten Silo Wall Tidy

UtensiloThe Uten Silo Wall Tidy was designed by Dorothee Becker and first released in 1969. One of the best known plastic designs of the 1960s, it has been now been re-released by Vitra.

The Uten Silo features a multitude of different shaped and sized pockets, hooks and clips, allowing you to store pretty much anything and everything in it.

It is available in two sizes in a choice of red, black or white plastic, priced from approximately £150 to £200. There is a deluxe version available in chrome that is much more expensive, but the plastic version is the original and in my opinion the best.

Utility Design are selling the full range online.

Camembert Cheese Clock

Clock03A whole world away from most of the other clocks we’ve featured is the Camembert Cheese Clock. It is not actually made from the French dairy product, but from the box in which these cheeses are sold.

Available in a choice of three nostalgic designs, Eiffel Tour, Fox & Crow or Black Cat, each one costs £30. They were made in Paris by Daniel Foulachon, a man described as an eccentric, which may be something of an understatement.

They can be ordered from Family Tree Shop – visit their website for details.

Verner Panton’s Living Tower

Living_tower_1004941If you know a fair bit about 60s design, you will probably recognise the image on the right. If not, you may well wonder what it is, what it does and why on earth you would want actually one.

Back in the Sixties, designers became increasingly interested in new ways of living, utilising the three dimensions of space and the idea of ‘living spaces’. From these came Verner Panton’s Living Tower.

Also known as the Pantower, the Living Tower is a large sculptural seating/relaxing/play unit designed in 1969 and now available again.
