Wendy Cotton Bustier from French Connection

Bustier

One of the most common retro crossovers is fifties and eighties fashion, with the 1980s plumbing much of the earlier decade's style and making pieces it's own. This Wendy Bustier from French Connection is the perfect staple piece for capturing styles from both decades.

In a cotton blend fabric, the bustier has a light sheen that lends a glamour to the look. In plain black, the sweetheart shape and boned corset style are ideal for a burlesque-inspired style. The fuschia version, meanwhile, captures the bold brights of an eighties look with equal ease.

Tulip Pocket Dress by YMC

Tulippocket

Looking beyond the high street can often mean going beyond the constraints of the most common retro influences, as seen in this forties influenced number by YMC. The Tulip Pocket Dress is a timeless style that leans heavily on a vintage look.

The wrapped coat-style dress combines a demure silhouette with some quirky retro detailing to create a late forties style that's truly tempting. The white accents on navy fabric, especially at the tulip pocket, provide an instant vintage look, with a high, wide collar and low hemline in keeping with the era of inspiration.

Deborah Azzopardi Pop Art style blinds from Creatively Different Roller Blinds

Azzopardi blind

It's generally hard to get too excited about blinds, a view that Creatively Different Roller Blinds are working hard to rectify. They sell custom-sized blinds that are printed with an image of your choice. Their collection includes many striking images, including this Pop Art-style collection from Deborah Azzopardi.

The image shown is one of five of her colourful images available on the site or, for an even more exclusive blind, you can buy a signed by the artist, limited (and much more expensive) edition of a floral design called Flower Quartet.

There's a price calculator on the website where you can work the cost based on the spec of your window. Just as a guidance, the telephone image above would cost £156 for a 100cm square window and, for comparison, the Flowers Quartet design is £362.

Whether first thing in the morning you can face the sun coming through an image that bright is another thing entirely…

Ikea introduces the Isamu Noguchi-inspired Vate table lamp range

Vate1

Midcentury design isn't the first thing you might associate with Ikea, but if you dig deep enough, you can find the odd gem lurking on the shelves, like the newly-introduced Vate table lamp range.

It's Ikea's take on the classic 1950s Akari table lamps by Isamu Noguchi, reissues of which sell for just under £160. The Ikea lights (which are in no way attributed directly with Noguchi) are much cheaper, offering up two designs (another pictured over the page), a handmade rice paper shade on a steel frame and of course, some ambient light for your table.

Prices start at £7.99.
