Unisex Hartwick Skimmer Shoe from American Apparel

Amaphartwick
American Apparel's aesthetic is deeply entrenched in the more eye-popping end of seventies and eighties fashions, but if you dig deeper there's some gems for the more conservatively dressed among us. These Hartwick Skimmer Shoes have the same retro credentials, but take cues from an earlier era.

Available in unisex sizes, these dress shoes are a great version of an early sixties formal pair. Available in a patent black or a rich vintage cream, they're a classic pair whose styling will last.

Get yours from American Apparel UK now for £65.

Chest Anglaise

500-Commode-Anglaise

The Chest Anglaise gives a truly British twist to a classic piece of French design.

The vintage style chest is made from cherrywood with a hand-painted mural of a Union Jack across the drawers. The wood has a distressed finished to add to its vintage feel.

It is a design that probably won’t be to everyone’s taste, and nor will the price at £2,450. But if both those elements suit you, then visit Sweetpea and Willow website to buy.

Selfridges opens its cenTEAnary vintage-style pop-up shop

Tea_self

Fancy a step into the past? Just pop into Selfridges, which has opened its cenTEAnary pop-up shop, which you'll find in its dining and cookshop department.

Decked out in a post-war style, the shops opens this week and stays open until 8th September 2009, awash with bunting, vintage bikes, tea urns, trestle tables, flags and of course lashings of gingham, reminiscent of a good, old-fashioned British tea party.

Of course, most of the above will be available to buy, a mix of vintage classics and modern designs with a nod to the past from people like Becky Oldfield and Emma Bridgewater. Shouldn't break the bank either – prices start at around £16.

Cappellini Homage to Mondrian cabinets by Shiro Kuramata

Mondrian_1

Art meets design, although both of the Cappellini Homage to Mondrian cabinets are likely to cost you the price of a semi-valuable work of art.

Iconic designer Shiro Kuramata has integrated the work of Dutch abstract painter Piet Mondrian into what really are stunning furniture designs, certain to dominate any room they appear in. On the technical side, both pieces are made of lacquered wood and mounted on rubber-based wheels, with the cabinets offering up plenty of storage space for just about anything.

And of course, you get some instantly recognisable art thrown in for good measure. Just as well, as neither comes cheap. Chaplins is currently selling them for around the £10,000 mark. If you want to check out the other design in the range, see over the page.

Thonet v Muji bentwood tables and chairs – classics reworked for the modern era

Thonet_muji

Here's an interesting collaboration – iconic German furniture company Thonet has teamed up with minimalist Japanese retailer Muji to produce affordable versions of some of its classic designs from days gone by – including the Thonet v Muji classic bentwood table and chairs.

Designer James Irvine has used some of Thonet's oldest designs, specifically the 'bentwood' furniture which originally made the company back in the 19th century and given them a more simplified, 21st century-friendly look. But best of all, for a price we might all be able to stretch to.

Which means you can get a new take on the classic 214 chair (originally produced in 1859) and matching table in natural or dark beech, handmade by Thonet, but sold by Muji for £215 (chair) or £325 (table). Look out for them in August, initially in the flagship Muji store on Tottenham Court Road, London.
