Designer vs high street: Tom Dixon Copper shade and the Asda Cilla pendant light

Asda_shade

OK, we’re not for a minute claiming that the Asda Cilla pendant light is anywhere near the same league as the Tom Dixon Copper shade. But if you want the look for very little cash, the supermarket variation might be worth a look.

We have featured the Dixon shade (left) in the past, it’s one of our favourites and if you want a 70s-style shade with a classy finish, this metalised copper mirror pendant is hard to beat and a solid investment. You can pick one up for around £155.

But if your budget is super-tight, the Asda Cilla pendant light might be worth a look. It’s actually steel with a ‘copper look’ and easy to fit on any standard fitting. The price? An extremely cheap £15.

Charlston Side Table

Charlstontable

Laura Ashley is far from being a hotbed of mid-century design, but they do occasionally have a surprise gem. One such item would be the Charlston Side Table which takes its style from further back, looking for inspiration from the 1920s.

It comprises of two mirrored drawers on art deco style curved legs. The piece is given an interesting twist as the table legs are made from solid birch, which contrasts with the sleek mirrored surfaces. It costs £225 and there is a matching chest of drawers available if you are looking for more storage space.

Full details can be found on the Laura Ashley website.

Woodstock Wallet

WoodstockwalletWhen those 200,000 gathered at Woodstock nearly 40 years ago, what did they imagine their legacy would be? Peace and love probably. Presumably they wouldn’t have imagined the Woodstock Wallet.

Produced by Mustard Accessories who do a range of wallets many with a retro theme, the Woodstock wallet is a faded brown leather wallet with a design taken from a festival poster. Other wallets in the range (which may cross the taste border in the novelty category) include Kes, Travis Bickle and  John Lenon.

Available to buy online from Ark Clothing, priced £20.  The ideal gift for the hippie who has sold out!

Secret Book 110 camera

Secret_book

110 film revolutionised photography in the 70s, making cameras easier to use and easier to load. But not as easy as the digital cameras that have now made the film more or less extinct. Except in Japan of course.

And from Japan comes the Secret Book camera. Yes, shaped like a vintage book, youu just pull off the casing and spine to expose a retro-styled camera that uses 110 film for capturing your precious moments.

It’s sized at just 4.5 x 1.5 inches and if you’re worried about getting the film (which can be developed at any specialist camera store), you can order that online too. The camera cost $55 (around £30). See over for a pic of the camera in book form.

Tivoli’s wooden Networks radio

Networks

Regular readers will know we’re suckers for any technology in wood – after all, it does match the sideboard and that’s got to be a bonus. But when it looks and works like the Tivoli Networks radio, that’s even better.

The Networks covers all radio bases – DAB, FM or internet radio (via your home network connection), offering access to thousands of stations. It also offers USB connectivity for playing back your MP3s, a ‘virtual’ analogue clock, two independent alarms with sleep/snooze slimline remote control and a screen for all your station information.

High-end audio is a given, but you can also boost the set-up by adding a matching speaker (pictured), CD player and subwoofer. But that stylish wood finish and technology doesn’t come cheap – £495 for the radio alone in a choice of cherry, walnut or wenge finish.
