Roberto Aflalo 1950s Aranha coffee table

Aranha

We have featured Brazilia Interiors previously, a company that focuses on the best design out of Brazil, both past and present – and this Aranha coffee table is certainly one of the gems from the current range.

Originally offered for sale in Brazil in the 1950s, the Aranha is a simple yet effective design by Roberto Aflalo, which sets a toughened glass on top of a sucupira base (a heavy and durable wood). There’s also room for a shelf underneath for your magazines and essentials.

This is a re-edition, not an original and it retails at a rather hefty £1950.

Albers Nesting Tables

AlbersnestingAnother astoundingly modern-looking design dating back to the Bauhaus heyday, the Albers Nesting Tables have been reissued by Vitra.

Designed by Josef Albers for the house of a Berlin psychoanalyst Fritz Moellenhaf, they combine geometric shapes with bold colours, turquoise, yellow, red and blue, lacquered underneath glass tops.

They cost £1030 from The Lighthouse. Not cheap but remember for that price, you are getting four tables, which doesn’t make it seem quite so bad!

Tokyo Soft Lounge Chair

Tokyo_soft_dormeuse_2

In the quest to find the ultimate statement seating, the Tokyo Soft Lounge Chair must come pretty near the top of the list. The combination of pure white leather and its distinctive curves make it hard to ignore.

Designed by Tokujin Yoshioka for Driade, it costs just under £1,400. There is a small cheaper version, the Tokyo Pop also available for less than £600.

It’s a bold and striking piece of furniture but not very practical, especially if you’ve got pets or small children. However, it does also come in other colours (including a great orange) which might be more functional.

Sky introduces Designer HD boxes with retro-styled looks

Skydesigner_2

Put off Sky because of the ugly box under your TV and even uglier dish? You’re probably the target market for the Sky HD Designer Collection.

Basically, it has collared some bright young things from the world or art and design to give the high-definition boxes a makeover. The designers vying to catch your eye are Basso & Brooke (who did the 70s-styled box above), Giles Deacon, Preen, Gareth Pugh (who does a Bridget Riley-esque op art box) and Jonathan Saunders.

All are available now in limited quantities, with prices between £199 and £299, plus your subscription. Shame that dish still looks so ugly.

Phone Box chair

Phonebox_chair
We do like our weird and wonderful designs, but this Phone Box chair is probably taking things a step too far.

Designed to look like an old-style British phone box, the Phone chair (to use its listed name) is the work of ‘sculptural artist’ Finn Stone and is custom-built from fibre glass. There’s no mention of any padding for your behind and back.

A price is also missing, with the website stating that price is on application. Which probably means that it isn’t cheap.
