Can’t Buy me Love by Jonathan Gould

Cantbuy
Interesting new book release for November if you happen to be a Beatles fan – Can’t Buy Me Love by Jonathan Gould.

15 years in the making and indeed researching, the book is part biography, part cultural history, looking at the Beatles, how their influences made then the band they were – and how the world of the 60s shaped them and was changed by them.

That includes a look at the influence of R&B, rockabilly, skiffle and Motown on the band’s sound, how The Beatles influenced other bands of the era and how events on both sides of the Atlantic – from the Angry Young Man movement of John Osborne and the Profumo scandal to the advent of television and the assassination of John F Kennedy – created the right cultural climate for the band’s meteoric rise.

If that appeals, you can get your hands on a copy from 8th November 2007, priced officially at £25 for the hardback (although Amazon are taking pre-orders for £12.50).

Limited Edition Alessandro M. Corkscrews

Bpopupalessirock Alessi Alessandro M. corkscrew was only designed a few years ago but is already a design favourite. The original is cute but now Panik are selling a number of Limited Edition Alessandro M. corkscrews.

Pictured here is my favourite, Ed Rock, the familiar corkscrew man dressed as a quintessential 60s rock star complete with shades and a psychedelic patterned guitar. For a more seventies touch, there is the Honolulu edition, dressed in a garish Hawaiian shirt and flower garland. Comic book fans may prefer the Superman version.

Prices range from approximately £39 to £60 depending on the exact design.

Eames Desk Unit

Eames_desk

Off to Ikea for a new desk? Why not save up for a few weeks longer and buy something with a bit more character, like the Eames Desk Unit.

One of our five favourite desks (a list still headed by the stunning George Nelson Home Desk), this one dates back to 1949 and is composed of plywood with a maple veneer and brushed metal, not to mention those eye-catching coloured screens.

The height is adjustable and it’s strong enough to hold your PC. Definitely a stylish addition to your home office, retailing for £748.

Vintage Globe Trotter Suitcases

GlobetrottersuitcaseAs regular readers will know, Globe Trotter are a British company that have quite a heritage as they’ve been making their suitcases since 1897. Whilst their new and reissued suitcases are good, you may want to buy a suitcase that reflects the product’s history. Luckily Pedlars now have a stock of Vintage Globe Trotter Suitcases.

Not only are these cases in a beautifully weathered condition, but Pedlars has customised them with a collection of genuine vintage travel stickers. With this luggage, you will immediately achieve the aura of being well-travelled even if you’ve not been further than Blackpool.

The cases cost between £110 and £450 which is cheaper than a brand new Globe Trotter.

Vintage sweet wrapper badges

Sweets

As a child, a good way of passing the time of day in the long holidays was making badges out of old packaging and crisp packets, something designer Anwen Williams is still doing with these vintage sweet wrapper badges.

There’s a good choice to choose from, including the Black Jack, Fruit Salad and Refresher pictured here, all 3.5cm in diameter and all handmade.

And you can pick them up for £2.50 each.
