Jackie O style coat from Wallis

Jackie_o

Jackie Onassis, or Jackie O as she’s better known, was one of the most influential style icons of the 1960s. It’s hardly surprising that clothing designers are still referencing her effortless style today with this Wallis coat as her namesake.

The oversized bow collar and three quarter sleeve combine to give a great silhouette that suits the former First Lady’s style pretty well. With a less fitted cut, the coat looks much more genuine in sixties style than many of its figure hugging couterparts.

It’s available from Wallis is black or purple for £75.

Firetrap Gale Mary-Jane shoes

Firetrap_gale

It may be a little bit of a cliché to wear polka dots for a fifties style, but when it’s executed correctly it’s the perfect retro fix. These Gale heels by Firetrap are a perfect style for a fifties look, be it traditional, pin-up or rockabilly.

The shaping is the best part, with a skinny Mary-Jane strap and rounded toe giving the uppers a great, sweetheart look. The curves at the back and the gradually tapered stilletto give a very fifties look to the profile too. With an even, pinprick polka dot, the shoe looks more classic than cartoonish.

This pair is available online from FM Footwear for £49.99.

Vintage Secret online boutique

Vintage_secret

Of the many vintage purveyors across the web, Vintage Secret‘s claim to be “The Vintage World’s Best Kept Secret” might just be fair (well… until now). As with all vintage shops, the wares are what makes the business, and they’ve got the makings of a great one.

These three dresses are just a sample of their current 1960s styles, though their remit goes further beyond the contraints of decades. With designer labels and lesser knowns, all the clothes have style and quality in abundance. Don’t expect the prices to be a steal, though, with condition and finds being of rare quality.

Get Cutie Elvis Print Dress

Elvisdress

Get Cutie make dresses and skirts from kitsch and retro patterned material. Prints include guitars, skulls and cowgirls, but the dress that stood out the most for me was this Elvis Print Dress.

It is a 100% cotton cap-sleeved mini dress featuring an extraordinary pop art print of The King in shades of blue, green and white. The print comprises of several different image of Elvis (close-up, with guitar, in fetching knitwear – but none of his latter period) along with occasional lettering of the word Elvis in case you were in any doubt as to who it was.

It costs £93 and can be bought online from ASOS.

Paisley mini-dress by Tibi

Paisley_dress

Psychedelic prints are a staple of the 1960s, from Twiggy’s own line to Biba and beyond. Carrying off a busy print and bright colours together can often be difficult, but this Tibi mini shift dress has the balance down pat.

With a colour palette of reds against white, this paisley print manages to be bright and firmly rooted in a sixties feel without being blinding. The more muted approach avoids a cartoonish retro feel, too. In a simple shift, with a short hem and high cut collar, the final product stands up next to its true vintage counterparts.

It’s available online from Blue Fly for $230.
