I have seen a lot of Dieter Rams items appear on eBay in the past, but certainly not this 1960s Dieter Rams-designed Braun FS 80-1 television.
It is absolutely stunning, but not without issue in the modern era. I will come to that in a moment. But for now, let’s talk modernist televisions, Rams-style.
The TV was made between the years of 1964 and 1967 and still looks ahead of the game all these years on. You can see why Dieter Rams has been hailed as one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. This is a television design that would still turn heads today, even if the proportions aren’t quite what we are used to in the 21st century.
This FS 80-1 model is made of wood with a grey plastic ‘skin’ and metal base. It is in original unrestored condition, with no damage, but ‘some nicks on edges’ from wear over the years and some yellowing as you would expect in light of the product used to make it.
As for the inner workings of this black and white TV, those are ‘fully refurbished’, so working just as it should, which is good news. But that doesn’t mean you can switch it on and watch tonight’s big movie. Far from it.
As you might have guessed, this is an analogue TV and a European one too, so you might want to investigate just what it can do and which adaptors you will need to get it working outside of its native Germany. With some work, you should get some output out of it. But not what you are used to from your huge flat-screen model.
I would suggest it would look good just as room decoration, but at £2,499 you might want more from it than that. On the plus side, the seller will consider a cheaper offer if the price is a little rich for you.
