Yes, this round-up is back. Updated and expanded, this is my pick of the retro Christmas tree decorations and baubles currently for sale.
But one word of caution. Judging by last year, a number of the retro Christmas tree decorations featured sold out quickly. So if you see something you really love, act quickly or be disappointed.
With that word of warning out of the way, here is the full list.
1. Charlie Brown and Peanuts tree decorations
Yes, I love Peanuts, so of course I went looking for some decorations featuring the Charles Schulz characters.
I found these on eBay, featuring most of the gang and although not huge, they do have the benefit of being on the affordable side, going from just £1.99 each on eBay, with free delivery on some of the range too. Lovely little things.
2. Classic Boombox Christmas tree decoration
If you want your tree to go old school this year, check out this Classic Boombox Christmas tree decoration.
Incredibly detailed, it has a metallic hanging tie and a touch of festive glitter too. Not cheap at £27, but this one will get the talking every year.
3. David Bowie Christmas tree bauble
The work of Cody Foster & Co, this is perfect for fans of the Thin White Duke.
Of course, the decoration isn’t inspired by that era. This is the Aladdin Sane era recreated in miniature and in glass. It looks amazing. £18 for this one, which would also make a great gift.
4. Nintendo Donkey Kong Cabinet Christmas ornament
There is more to this Nintendo Donkey Kong Cabinet Christmas ornament than meets the eye.
Yes, it is a mini replica of a vintage arcade cabinet for your tree and officially licensed from Nintendo. But if you press the “controller” buttons on the ornament it mights up and plays the sounds of this classic video game. Marvellous. $19.99 for this.
5. VW Campervan with tree Christmas decoration
As you can see, this is quite a sizeable thing.
It is what it looks like, a classic Camper with a tree on top for a touch more festive appeal and a hanger so it can go straight on the tree. £11.95 if you want this.
6. Glass pinball machine decoration
I mentioned one of these last year, but it was ridiculously expensive. Paperchase has now come to the rescue with something easier on the wallet.
A recreation of a classic pinball machine in glass and with a ‘Merry Christmas’ message on the screen, it sells for £10. But it is on the ‘3 for 2’ deal there, so even cheaper if you want more.
7. Set of official Star Wars Christmas tree baubles
No retro Christmas tree decorations round-up would be complete without Star Wars.
This is actually great value. A set of six baubles featuring characters in the Star Wars A New Hope universe, each one 7.5cm x 7.5cm. You can grab a set for £14.99. Check out the retailer’s site to see then hanging on the tree.
8. Prince Christmas ornament
Yes, this is Prince in all his Purple finery.
Not much stock of this one, so move quickly if you fancy it. What you see is what you get, with Prince in Purple Rain era, suspended from a metallic hanging tie, coated with a glossy sheen and complete with glitter ruffle collar. £26 for this.
9. UFO Christmas decoration at John Lewis
UFO or flying saucer, take your pick. But this is definitely a touch of retro sci-fi for your tree.
Again, the appeal here is in the detail, with all of those windows and the little glittery touches that add character and a festive feel. It sells for £12 and if you like the theme, there’s also a robot decoration too.
10. Classic drum kit Christmas decoration
For the music lover inn your life, a red drum kit decoration.
The work of the Vondels, this is a classic set up in a Christmassy colour, finished with glitter and a gold thread. £15 for this one.
11. Festive Mini And tree Christmas ornaments
Take your pick from gold, red or silver for these classic retro Christmas decorations.
The appeal here is the Mini, with the tree adding in some seasonal good cheer. Made of glass, they sell for £8.95 each.
12. 80s Mixtape Christmas tree bauble
I don’t think it gets more retro than this one.
Memories of classic mixtape and cassette brands all wrapped up in this glass decoration, which is another Cody Foster design. £14 for this one.
13. The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Drum Christmas Glass Ornament
The Beatles make two appearances in this rundown, with this being the first and the priciest.
This was part of a larger range, but it looks like the pick of that bunch, the Yellow Submarine, is no longer available. But this classic 1967 drum is. The work of Christopher Radko, it is finished with glitter and gemstones and sells for £50.
14. Kiss Christmas tree decoration
For the rocker in your life, an icon of the genre.
Yes, you can get Gene Simmons of Kiss in full make-up and with bass guitar for your Christmas tree. He is 12cm tall and sells for £22.
15. Lego baubles by Bits and Badges
If, like me, you love a bit of Lego, then you might want some retro Christmas tree decorations made out of the stuff.
These baubles are made from brand new Lego bricks and plates in the colour of your choice and look pretty stunning when built. They work well as a group in different colours too. They sell for around £9.95 each.
16. Elvis White Cape hanging decoration
The retailer has two versions of Elvis, but I’m going full-on Vegas version. The catsuit, the cape, the sideburns, the flares, this one has it all. £22 for this 12.5cm decoration.
17. Kurt Adler Doctor Who Tardis glass ornament
An icon of a very different kind. The sci-fi kind.
There are a few variations of this one available, but the one here is officially licensed, made of glass and faithful to the original design. £6.13 for this one.
18. Zoltar machine Christmas decoration
Fan of the movie Big? Then you will want this on your tree.
A mini replica of the Zoltar machine. Yes, the one that wasn’t plugged in and turned the boy into Tom Hanks in the timeless movie. So much detail on this one too. Made of glass and plastic, it is hand-crafted and sells for $14.99.
19. Subbuteo player decorations by Home & Glory
The seller doesn’t actually use the word Subbuteo, perhaps because of a trademark issue. But that’s pretty much what you get with these retro Christmas tree decorations.
Choose your team and a player in those colours will appear in an acrylic bauble at your home, ready to hang. If might get pricey if you want a full team, but at £9.50 they are not badly priced for one or two.
20. Classic indie and rock decorations by Mrs Bojingles
Whether it’s classic rock or more obscure indie, there should be something in this range for you.
Of course, we have flagged up the Primal Scream Screamadelica decoration above, but you can choose from The Pixies and Teenager Fanclub through to Neu!, Lou Reed and Bowie. These handmade designs are great as a gift for a music lover too.
21. VW Beetle decoration by Gisela Graham
Well, I have done the Camper Van, so it seems right to include the Beetle too.
I actually thought this was a Fiat 500 at first, but the frontage confirms this is a Beetle. This one is acrylic, with some nice festive touches and a price tag of £8.
22. Santa on a Vespa tree decoration
Yes, a little bit kitsch, but I don’t see that as a bad thing when it comes to retro Christmas tree decorations.
A classic Father Christmas riding a Vespa scooter with presents gathered on the back. Could it get more festive? £26 for this glass decoration.
23. The Beatles replica record player Christmas ornament
You don’t have to love The Beatles to love this one. On second thoughts, you probably do.
Saying that, fans of vintage record players might get a kick out of this one too. Made of moulded resin, it is so incredibly detailed, I almost expect it to spin the record when I press a button. £14.56 for this decoration.
24. PacMan wooden Christmas Tree decorations
If you want multiple decorations and love classic arcade games, these could be for you.
Six decorations, with a choice of wood to choose from (as they are handmade) and selling as a set for £24.99. if you prefer classic cars, check out this set, which is a similar idea.
25. Fender Stratocaster guitar Christmas decoration
If you want the drum kit I feature earlier to have some company, you should perhaps consider this one.
A classic guitar recreated in resin and perfect for the rock god in your life. £7 for this one
That’s all for now. If I see anymore, I’ll update here or on the site. If you see any interesting retro Christmas decorations, please do get in touch.
