These are vintage rather than reissues. Which adds to the character of the Urban Renewal vintage picnic hamper sets.

I have featured various picnic hampers and sets in the past, but there aren’t many obviously retro ones around at the moment. My favourite recent find was the MissPrint Sapling picnic hamper at John Lewis. Except it wasn’t that recent when I checked back and it’s no longer available at the John Lewis website.

You can get some nice 1970s-style picnic bags at Rex London, but they are just the bags. Although some have containers available separately. What I’m saying is that there is a gap in the market for a blatantly retro picnic set if someone wants to make one ‘new’. But until they do that, I would recommend having a look at these vintage examples at Urban Outfitters.

They are the kind of picnic sets you might recall your parents or grandparents having in the house or in the car. Actually, they might be a bit more premium than that.

Take your pick from red or brown briefcases, with each one packed with everything you would want for a retro picnic. The flasks (hot drinks were essential back in the day, whatever the temperature), the storage containers, the plates and of course, the cutlery. Proper cutlery too, not plastic knives and forks. This stuff is as sturdy as the stuff in your house. Perhaps even more so. But do check the imagery as the sets differ in terms of contents.

It’s important to note that these are authentic, pre-loved vintage pieces which are ‘sold as seen’ and ‘may show signs of wear and tear’. But that only adds to the character. You really can’t find sets like this today unless you buy vintage.

Not cheap though. If you want one of these they sell for £125 each. Despite that, I don’t expect them to be around for long.
