Matt Mills mid-century design pop art prints

Mills_prints

We’re very much liking these mid-century design pop art prints by Matt Mills.

Available from Thumbtack Press, the prints use classic pieces of mid-century design on contrasting backgrounds to create some really eye-catching pieces of affordable art. As well as the Eames and Barcelona chairs featured here, there’s aldo the Marshmallow sofa, Eames rocker and Wassily chair to choose from, all sized at 8 x 10 inches and all printed on heavyweight paper using archival inks.

The price for each print is a very reasonable $24.99, which is around £13.

Television Photo Frame

TvframeShaped like an old-fashioned television, the kind with antennae aerial on top (like Evil Edna from Willo the Wisp), this TV Photo Frame will make a good stocking filler. Especially for anyone who has ever fancied seeing themselves on television!

Available in black or white, it is double-sided allowing you to choose between two photographs to display. The inlay that comes with the frame is of the old test card which looks pretty good too.

It costs just £5 from Home Temptations.

Art Kane: Visionary Portraits 1958 – 68

Stones
January sees the start of an exhibition of work from one of rock’s finest photographers under the name Art Kane: Visionary Portraits 1958 – 68 at the Snap Galleries in Birmingham.

Kicking off his photographic career with a portrait of 57 of the worlds most famous Jazz musicians for Esquire in 1958, Kane went on to snap just about anyone worth capturing for the next two decades in his own individual style –  The Rolling Stones (pictured here), Bob Dylan, The Who, Cream, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Frank Zappa – they’re all here.

Alongside the iconic images (Sonny and Cher underwater – the inspiration for that Nirvana sleeve 25 years later for example), there are new photographs too – including unpublished Art Kane studio portraits of Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey from the mid-sixties. And if the images catch your eye, limited edition copies will be available, each fully authenticated by Jonathan Kane on behalf of the Art Kane estate.

Art Kane : Visionary Portraits 1958 – 68 runs from 12th January to 12th March 2008. For further details or directions to the gallery, check the website.

Keith Haring Dominoes Set

Kharingjigsaw_2Continuing with the Eighties nostalgia, one of the most recognisable artists from that decade would have to be Keith Haring, who made his name with graffiti style art around New York. He believed in getting his work out to as wide an audience as possible so it has always been available on numerous products, such as cards and t-shirts.

One of the more interesting items available is the Keith Haring Dominoes Set. Featuring his distinctive pop art animal characters, it makes a nice alternative to the standard spotted dominoes, and is especially suitable to teaching children the game.

Halfpint Village Store have a set available to buy on their Ebay store, priced just under £23.
