Reefer Madness Toilet Seat

Il_430xN_137092603

I think it is safe to say that this is the first time that we have featured a toilet set here and it will probably be the last time too. And whilst I’m by no means suggesting that this item is the most tasteful or something that every home should have, if you are a huge fan of exploitation movies, then you this Reefer Madness Toilet Seat might be be of interest to you, At the very least it is a good excuse to mention a cult classic film.

Filmed in the 1930s, originally intended as a cautionary tale funded by a church group, the film was recut for the exploitation film market and found cult fame when it was rediscovered in the 1970s. The toilet seat has been decoupaged with the poster for the film and decorated with red glass stones and a black ball fringe. You’ll be pleased to know that it has also been finished with an acrylic coating to prevent any water damage.

Should you wish to purchase the Reefer Madness Toilet Seat, it costs around $79.99 (around £52) plus shipping from Toiluxe on Etsy

Stripy Chaise Longue

983

Is there a more decadent piece of furniture than the chaise longue? Falling somewhere between a bed and chair, it manages to be less useful than both and suggests a life of leisure that doesn’t fit with modern life or homes. Still that doesn’t stop me looking at them, imaging that one day I might possibly have need of one, and if such a day ever comes then this Stripy Chaise Longue will be considered.

It has the classic chaise longue shape but is saved from looking too out-dated by the striped chenille fabric by the Designers Guild, in daringly clashing lime and pinks.

It costs £1,500 from Mooch and you’ll have to pay another £47 each if you want the matching chaise cushions to go with it.

Vintage Gas Station Numbers

Il_430xN_155841787

For fans of retro Americana, an Etsy seller going by the name of lacklustreco has a good stock of Vintage Gas Station Numbers available to buy.

They have a variety of numbers in various sizes; medium measuring 12 inches tall by 7.5 inches wide, large 20 by 12.75 and the enormous XL size 30 by 16. The exact age of the signs isn’t given, but they are vintage so have various degree of weathering that adds to their character.

They are priced $16, $26 and $52, although adding shipping costs will inevitably push the price up especially to send them anywhere outside of the USA. Buy them from Etsy.

Boxsall Urban Picnic Box

Urbanpicnic

There is probably just enough of summer left to justify buying the Urban Picnic Box from Boxsall.

Whilst most picnic carriers tend towards the shabby chic end of the retro spectrum, this has a tougher look, looking like 1980s stereo and being marketed at “graffiti artists, breakers, subway performers and inner city folks”. The other selling point is that the Urban Picnic Box, like all of Boxsall’s products, is environmentally-friendly, being made from post-consumer pulp with all of its accessories (trays, bowls, napkins, cups) made from compostable materials.

The Urban Picnic Box costs $35 (around £25) and can be bought directly from the Boxsall website.

Long Distance Love Plate

Finally it seems that Urban Outfitters in the UK is expanding its homeware section and whilst it still has someway to go before it is as good as its USA counterpart, little gems like the Long Distance Love Plate make it worth visiting.

The ceramic plate features illustrations of various old-fashioned telephone styles Many look like traditional Bakelite phones, some look like the Princess phone, although sadly none are Scaniphones or Trimphones, my preferred choice of retro telephony.

The plate measures 22cm in diameter, is microwave and dishwasher safe and costs £6 from Urban Outfitters.

Ben Desk Clock by Alexander Harris

Bendeskclock

Alexander Harris was inspired by probably the most famous clock in the world when creating his Ben Desk Clock.

The design has a minimalist graphic look to it with the clock tower resembling a child’s building block. The desk clock has four clock faces, allowing you to set a different time zone on each one and marking it on the blackboard-like base.

The Ben Desk Clock costs £95 (£103 with shipping in the UK or £115 anywhere else) from Counter Objects.
