“I Think Therefore Who Am I?” by Peter Weissman

Ithinkthefore

There are plenty of social commentary books out there about the 1960s, and even more biographies and autobiographies about the stars of the decade, but “I Think Therefore Who Am I” by Peter Weissman offers a more personal take on the psychedelic era.

The book is Weissman’s memoir of 1967, which was year he (like many others) discovered LSD. The author's starkly honest memories do not portray the time as a golden age, but at the same time he doesn't renounce it or downplay its personal significance. I always like a coming-of-age story, which this essentially is, but this has the added bonus of being set in a particularly interesting time.

“I Think Therefore Who Am I?” is available to buy from Amazon, priced just under £14.

Vintage Style Marquee Lights

15968209_00_b

Have you secretly always dreamed of seeing your name up in lights above a theatre? Then you may be interested in these vintage style Marquee Lights, which are an interesting twist on the fashion for vintage lettering.

They are being sold as individual letters so spelling out your whole name could take up a lot of room, not to mention cost a fair bit, but you could perhaps opt for you just your initials instead. Every letter of the alphabet is available as well as this ampersand sign and the rather more modern @ sign. They cost $178 each (around £120) and are supplied with bulbs.

Sadly only available online for delivery on the USA, but if you are over there (or have someone there to order it for you!), then visit the Urban Outfitters website to order.

Man Ray’s “Keeps London Going” Products

TFLAMR

From the same Underground collection as the water bottles featured earlier in the week, are a couple of products featuring Man Ray’s “Keeps London Going” design.

The striking design, featuring a planet and the London Transport logo, first featured on a poster for London Transport in 1938. It has been reproduced here on an apron (£20), teatowel (£10), notebooks (from £6) and mug (£10).

Visit the Blisshome website for further details on how to order these items.

Crown Wall Hooks

Crownhook

Continuing the trend for all things British, I’ve spotted several online retailers selling this Crown Wall Hook. It has a worn bronze finish to it, to give it a vintage look. It measures 35cm high by 28cm wide and can be used to hang a variety of things, although using it for towels seems to be the most common suggested use.

Cox and Cox will be selling these hooks from mid-June priced £12 each. Visit the Cox and Cox website to pre-order.

“Best of British” Print

Haveanicedayposter

New in at Pussy Home Boutique this week is this cheery “Best of British” Print.

The print features a 1960s-style cartoon of happy commuters on a traditional British bus (clearly not a modern day scene as a crowded bus journey these days is rather less fun). The advertising board on the bus reads “Best of British” and the upbeat, rather more American slogan “Have a Nice Day” is at the top of the image.

It is sold unframed, measures 70cm by 50cm and costs £20. Visit the Pussy Home Boutique website to buy.

Swinging Carnaby Weekend

Swingingcarnaby

On 13th and 14th June Carnaby Street will be revisiting the era with which it is synonymous with Swinging Carnaby, a weekend of events and promotions celebrating the 60s.

The street will host a range of 60s inspired activities with highlights including complimentary 60s style makeovers courtesy of MAC and Pix!, style advise on dressing like Twiggy in the Beauty Lounge and archive displays from that period from Lee Jeans, Van’s, Fred Perry and Hilfiger Denim. DJS will be playing in many of the stores, whilst live bands with a retro influence will play from a stage at the corner of Carnaby and Broadwick Streets.

The weekend also offers another opportunity to see Philip Townsend’s photography exhibition “Sorry you Missed The 60s” and Art Vinyl will host an exhibition of iconic album artwork from the period.

For further information on the Swinging Carnaby weekend, visit the Carnaby website.
