Queen’s Head Mirror

Gm_queenshead_popup

Designer Giles Miller is best known for his furniture made from cardboard, but he has left this obsession briefly behind to make the rather patriotic Queen’s Head Mirror.

The cut-out mirror is in the shape of Queen Elizabeth’s profile in her younger days, as it used to appear on stamps and coins. The mirror is given a nice finishing touch of a three dimensional chain of pearls around her neck.

It is available in three sizes with prices ranging from £20 to £30. Visit the Farm Designs website to order.

“Eight Hours of Fame” Pillowcase

Eighthoursoffame4web_2

We’ve featured several novelty pillows here in the past, including an 80s ghetto blaster shape pillow, a cassette player shaped one and pillows with a guitar and amp printed on them. Joining this illustrious list, is the “Eight Hours of Fame” pillowcase.

The 100% Egyptian cotton pillowcase has a black and white picture of a retro (possibly 1980s?) television printed on it. It certainly isn’t a modern television set as it control dials rather than the buttons we are accustomed to these days. When you lie down, your head will be in the middle of the television, just as if you were on the screen which is perhaps a better way to appear on television than subjecting yourself to humiliation on a reality TV show.

It costs £25 from Product of Your Environment.

Newgate Bullitt Alarm Clock

792122_m

The sound of the alarm clock is never welcome, but its particularly painful on these cold grey mornings. Whilst we can’t promise that the Newgate Bullitt Alarm Clock will make you leap out of bed with enthusiasm, it will at least be a stylish addition to your morning routine.

Presumably named after the Steve McQueen film, the Bullitt Alarm Clock has a retro shape and an interesting numbering system.

It is available in red, priced £35 from Heal’s.

True Love’s Clouds Duvet Set

Truelovescloud

The True Love’s Clouds Duvet Set was designed by street artist True Love Always.

Graffiti isn’t the first thing than springs to mind when you see the colourful design, which bears more of a resemblance to psychedelic graphic design of the 1960s. On closer inspection the swirling pattern in yellow, red, orange, purple and blue contains the words “True Love Always”. The duvet is made of a high quality cotton with a 250 thread count percale.

A double duvet with two matching pillowcases costs £117.50. It can be bought online from Hidden Art Shop.

“Let Them Eat Cake” Cake Stands

Letthemeatcakestands

There aren’t many things more civilised than taking afternoon tea with cakes presented on a tiered cake stand. The wonderfully named Let Them Eat Cake specialise in making cake stands from vintage china.

Their readymade selection includes pieces made from bright coloured crockery from the Forties, Fifties and Sixties which is just the right side of twee. Many of the designs are topped off with a cup, which allows the stands to be used for serving goodies other than cakes. Let Them Eat Cake will also make cake stands using your own old plates, giving a new lease of life to mismatched pieces.

The readymade cake stands costs between £40 and £65, with prices on application for bespoke pieces. Visit the Let Them Eat Cake website for further details.

The One Ton Show, Shoreditch Town Hall, London

Waterloosunset

The One Ton Show at Shoreditch Town Hall brings together 100 artists, illustrators, graphic designers, photographers and print-makers to sell their work for just £100.

Why the retro interest? As well as the £100 restriction, the show has a theme of “London Lyrics” so all of the pieces are inspired by London-related songs. This has resulted in some great pieces inspired by favourite songs from the past, including “Itchycoo Park”, “Dedicated Follower of Fashion”, “Rain Fall Down”, “Down at the Type Station at Midnight” and “Electric Avenue”. Unsurprisingly, The Clash feature heavily with several pieces namechecking “London Calling”.

Perennial Retro to Go favourites, People Will Always Need Plates” are exhibiting at the show and above is their piece inspired by The Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset”.

The show runs from Thursday 4th December to Sunday 7th December at Shoreditch Town Hall. Further details can be found The One Ton Show website.
