For sale: Philip Johnson-designed mid-century house in New Canaan, Connecticut, NY, USA

Can1

One for our US readers (or UK readers with an urge to relocate) – the Philip Johnson-designed mid-century house in New Canaan, Connecticut, NY, USA.

Johnson designed the house back in 1953 – and it’s a stone’s throw away from his more famous Glass House. Indeed, there’s plenty of glass in this one too, mixed with more traditional masonry, slate-tiled floors and plastered walls. There’s also a gravel courtyard at its centre, designed as a ‘negative imprint’ of the house itself.

Kartell space age Colombo Phone Table

Kartell

Ok, we’ll admit right now that this isn’t a retail piece – but this Kartell space age Colombo Phone Table could be yours with a little work and money.

It’s actually the work of one of our regular readers (Andrew), who has fitted the base of a Colombo phone into the lid of a Kartell modular unit (the lip on the phone’s base allowing it to be recessed), adding the classic Guzzini Sorella lamp (from 1972) to complete this space age telephone table.

If you’re working towards that Space 1999 look (and don’t mind getting your hands dirty with a bit of DIY), it’s well worth trying yourself. More close-up images over the page.

Griffin x Mackintosh classic trench coat

Mackintosh

Griffin has teamed up with iconic raincoat maker Mackintosh to add a small twist on a classic – the Griffin x Mackintosh trench coat.

As you’d expect from a Mackintosh coat, it’s made of double-sided rubberised cotton, so when the rain comes down, your clothes are safe from a soaking. Aside from that, you get all the traditional detailing – centre vent on the rear, breathing holes under the arm and concealed buttons leading up to a slim collar.

Available in khaki, it sells for £495.

Oluce 1970s Joe Colombo ceiling lamp

Colombo_ceiling

A strange design, the Oluce Colombo ceiling lamp can add a quirky and slightly industrial look to a room.

Dating back to 1972 and designed (as the name suggests) by Joe Colombo, the Colombo lamp offers both direct and indirect light from adjustable aluminium reflector, with a chrome-plated stem and lacquered ceiling fixing finishing things off.

Not his best, but certainly a talking point – and yours for £331.
