Thonet v Muji bentwood tables and chairs – classics reworked for the modern era

Thonet_muji

Here's an interesting collaboration – iconic German furniture company Thonet has teamed up with minimalist Japanese retailer Muji to produce affordable versions of some of its classic designs from days gone by – including the Thonet v Muji classic bentwood table and chairs.

Designer James Irvine has used some of Thonet's oldest designs, specifically the 'bentwood' furniture which originally made the company back in the 19th century and given them a more simplified, 21st century-friendly look. But best of all, for a price we might all be able to stretch to.

Which means you can get a new take on the classic 214 chair (originally produced in 1859) and matching table in natural or dark beech, handmade by Thonet, but sold by Muji for £215 (chair) or £325 (table). Look out for them in August, initially in the flagship Muji store on Tottenham Court Road, London.

Bernhard Willhelm x Mykita 70s-style Franz and Luke sunglasses

Bernard2

If you want some retro-style sunglasses that are guaranteed to make an impact in the sun, you should check out the Bernhard Willhelm x Mykita Franz and Luke sunglasses, which are now available from Oki-Ni.

Both of these stylish designs are limited editions and both are inspired by skiing, in particular, the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Olympics – we're guessing Franz is dedicated to downhill ski legend Franz Klammer, but we're not sure about Luke. Any ideas?

For your money, you get aviator-style glasses in mirrored gold, matching gold-coloured frames and a rather hip case to store them away. See over the page for a picture of the other pair, with both available now for £249.

eBay watch: 1970s Dieter Rams-designed Braun DW30 digital watch

Rams_watch

It certainly isn't in 'as new' condition, but the Braun DW30 digital watch is certainly a rare and collectable timepiece – and it's on eBay right now.

Designed by hugely influential industrial designer Dieter Rams, along with Dietrich Lubs back in 1978, it really is classic Rams – style, simplicity and functionality, with the smallest detail every bit as important as the largest. All the (fairly basic) functions still work on it and according to the seller, the watch has been professionally cleaned and given new batteries.

Just a shams about the worn condition really – not really bad, but you would ideally hope for better, especially in view of the price. it's on a 'Buy It Now' for £750 or a 'Best Offer' if you want to chance your arm. See below for more images and background detail.

London Calling mobile phone – shaped like a red telephone box

Londoncalling

Ok, it's no iPhone, but you can be sure that the London Calling mobile phone will catch as many eyes when you take a call.

Yes, shaped like a classic (and now rarely-seen) K6 red telephone box, the London Calling phone has novelty appeal and covers all the phone basics too – with a TFT screen, SMS and MMS messaging, polyphonic ringtones and GPRS connectivity. Plenty to remind you of Britain too, including '15 iconic images' of the country and the likes of Rule Britannia and God Save The Queen amongst the pre-loaded ringtones.

Sold with travel charger, battery and start-up guide, it sells for £85.95.  More than your average PAYG phone, but this is no average handset – for better or worse.

Dr Martens Manton desert boots

Doc_desert

What do you get if you cross a Dr Martens boot with a classic desert boot? You get the Dr Martens Manton desert boots.

Whether phasing two classic styles is a good idea is something that's open to debate (I'm sure you'll already have decided if you love or hate these), but for the record, the boots are available in three colours, with two eyelets, contrast stitching and midsole plus the trademark air cushioned sole.

Hip in Leeds are doing pre-orders (for August delivery), prices around the £75 mark.

Rolly mid-century style occasional table

Rolly1

Not just any old occasional table, the Rolly mid-century style occasional table also doubles up as a neat bit of storage.

Even if it was just a standard table, we would love it – those 50s-style curves would look great in any mid-century inspired home. But as a concealed tambour door also slides open to offer up some storage, the Rolly is also perfect for shoving in all those old magazines should someone unexpectedly call.

Made of American black walnut and standing around 39cm high, it's exclusive to Heals and is priced at £695. See another image over the page.
