1950s designed interlocking dishes from Guzzini

Guzzini red dishes
Another way to add some style to your dining table with these interlocking dishes from Guzzini

The plastic/acrylic dishes are made from two sets, each set having two connected bowls. The two sets can lock together to create four bowls as shown in the image.

They are a reissued from a design by Fratelli Guzzini in the 1950s, being sold now as part of the company's 'vintage' collection. All the items in the collection have this distinctive two-tone colouring and reproduce Guzzini's original shapes but are now made using modern manufacturing techniques.

The dishes are currently on sale at House of Fraser for £17.60.

Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair gets Golden Era finish

Gold_egg

It's been on the market 52 years, so we can't begrudge the Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair a new finish, specifically a Golden Era finish.

Named after the 'Golden' age of design (the 1950s), this 1958 design classic is now upholstered in sand-coloured Steelcut Trio, a cross-stitched woven fabric from Kvadrat, matched with a velvey seat pad and a grey, powder-coat aluminium base. Nice, but for me, not a patch on the 50th anniversary Egg Chair.

Saying that, it is a lot cheaper than that particular edition. The Aram Store is selling this for £3,545, which is £600 less than even the standard Fritz Hansen-made Egg Chair.

Ikea’s midcentury-style Olle chairs

Ikea_olle

Ikea has an interesting – and cheap – bit of midcentury-inspired design on the market, these Olle chairs.

They could be a piece of 40s or 50s Scandinavian design, but they are in fact modern-day pieces (what else from Ikea?), offering up a classic frame made of birch, birch veneer back rail, scooped seat for comfort and a glossy finish in black, white or red.

Available now and perfect for dining or occasional chairs, they retail for £22 each.

Flying Saucer bowl from Museum of Robots

Flying saucer bowl

Mention a fruit bowl and it's unlikely you'll be getting too excited. That might change when you take a look at this Flying Saucer bowl made by the wonderfully named Museum of Robots

You'd expect your alien spacecraft to look a touch more high-tech these days but this wooden bowl is shaped like a flying saucer from a 1950s B-movie. Ideal for storing some of your five-a-day, the bowl is presumably a gift from a friendly and useful species. Open it up and its lid can be used as a second bowl, resting on a surface by using its alien antennae.

You can buy the bowl with a stainless steel base (as pictured) for $250 or with a natural wood base for $150.

Ercol Originals 1950s-designed nest of tables by Lucian Ercolani

Ercol_nest

We have featured the Ercol Originals range in the past, but not the nest of tables, which is probably the pick of the bunch.

It's an original 1950s design, first produced in 1956, the work of company founder Lucian Ercolani. Today, they offer functionality and affordable midcentury style, those angled legs and a finish that shows off the wood's grain perfect for a period living room.

Three tables for your cash, priced around the £495 mark.

Space Shuttle pillow by BBC

Shuttle

Not the cheapest 'pillow' on the planet (or should be cushion), but the Space Shuttle pillow by BBC is certainly one of the more distinctive.

Of course, modelled on the iconic Space Shuttle and produced by BBC (the fashion brand from Pharrell Williams and Nigo), it's a limited edition piece, sized around 35cm and made of cotton.

Which is all good. But that price? A heart-stopping 160 Euros. Methinks you're paying just a little for the brand.
