Habitat’s modernist Rocker chair

Habitat_rocker

Earlier today I mentioned Jean Prouve – and coincidentally, the Rocker chair from Habitat has a hint of Prouve in its design.

This James Harrison design is like a stripped-down version of the classic 1930 Cité Armchair, modernist in looks, but at the same time ideal for the modern home. Various versions are available – with a choice of natural and dark stained oak for the frame and berry pink wool, brown and white leather for the upholstery.

A reissued Cité Armchair sells for over £2,000. A Habitat Rocker sells from £399.

Jean Prouve Antony Chair – the minimalist lounger

Vitra_prouve
Perhaps lacking the upholstery you might expect from a lounger, the Antony Chair by Jean Prouve does make amends with a really striking design.

The lack of soft seating might be a problem for some, but the sloping natural oak back and seat should still  offer a comfortable place to kill some time. And in contrast to that wood is a lacquered sheet & tubular steel frame – available in either cream or black.

It’s a chair with a heritage too – designed in 1954 (one of Prouve’s later designs) for the cité universitaire at Antony near Paris, it’s very much a forerunner for many examples of corporate or institutional seating that followed. Reissued by Vitra, it retails for £709.

Copacabana Guitar – designed by Eero Aarnio

Copa_guitar

A guitar designed by Eero Aarnio? Yes, it’s true – and you can buy the Copacabana Guitar online.

The Copacabana Guitar is a fairly modern design with its roots in the past. It’s the brainchild of Antti J. Kallio, who approached Eero Aarnio after seeing the designer’s Copacabana Table, believing it had the look of a Bo Diddley-style guitar body. A couple of weeks later, Aarnio (with the help of Kallio) had reworked the design into a guitar, ready to go into production.

Retro Aeromobile from the Hanging Mobile Gallery

Planes300

Classic children’s toys and furniture are undeniably more stylish than their modern counterparts. If you’re decking out a nursery or looking for a stylish gift for some new parents then a retro styled hanging mobile might just be perfect.

This stunning Aeromobile from the Hanging Mobile Gallery is a classic design, reminiscent of pre-war children’s toys.

The mobile by Flensted costs £35, not bad for a little piece of art.

Zero’s Foto floor lamp – based on old studio lighting

Foto_2
Perfect for the movie obsessive, the Zero Foto floor lamp is a modern take on vintage film and photography studio lighting.

The work of Thomas Bernstrand and Mattias Ståhlbom, it’s a cast aluminium lamp with an adjustable steel base, as well as an adjustable head so you can aim the light. In fact, if you want to highlight something in a room (like a painting), it’s just the thing.

As well as a standard floor lamp, there’s also a small version and variations for the ceiling and wall. Prices for the floor lamps start at the equivalent of £500.
