John Lewis Patent Rain Hat

Patent hat

The 1960s' penchant for modern fabrics has changed a lot of things about the way we dress, but some of the experiments didn't always make it past the turn of the decade. We've all seen many a reinvention of the plastic patent mac, but its accompanying headgear is less typical.

John Lewis have taken the revived patent rainwear look and applied it to a basic hat shape, creating a style evocative of mid sixties rainwear. It captures that youthful and bright side of the mid sixties in England, in this fantastic shade of red.

Orange Zip Shift Dress by Dorothy Perkins

Orange zip

Orange seems to be a statement colour that went out of fashion in the 1980s and never quite made its way back. Thankfully for retrophiles, that means it's an immediate way to get some mid century chic, when it's done right.

This Orange Zip Dress from Dorothy Perkins takes a simple, sixties style shift dress and adds a twist with zip detailing. The result looks almost inspired by the Mondrian dress, with curved squares keeping a slick design-based look. The deep orange red shade finishes off a retro mini to perfection.

It's available online from Dorothy Perkins now for £30.
