Newgate Metro – 1930s-style mantel clock

Newgate_metro

It's always good to see cool retro design that doesn't cost a fortune – and thats certainly the case with the Newgate Metro clock.

Oozing that 1930s vibe, the Metro mantel clock is a smaller version of the original wall-based Metro, keeping the same look, curves and vintage-style digits, but reducing the size and adding an alarm.

Take your pick from red or black, both retailing for £20.

Heal’s Cage Planters

Cageplanters_m

Winter probably isn’t behind us yet, but already shops are preparing for warmer weather with more outdoor products coming onto the market, as is illustrated by this being the second planter we’ve featured this week.

This Cage Planter is from Heal’s and is made of wirework in either green or white. Like Habitat’s space age planters, these too will make quite a statement in your patio or garden.

They cost £117.45 each and can be ordered from the Heal’s website although they are waiting stock delivery at the moment, so you may have to wait a little while to get your hands on it.

Lucio Wall Sculpture

Lucio-light_medium

Whilst we have featured plenty of designs from the other Northern European countries, Iceland has not been so prominent. That may change with the discovery of Birkiland, a site that aims to take the work of Icelandic designers to a wider audience. Browsing their selections, Lucio by Siggi Anton caught my eye.

Lucio comprises of 12 mirrors with 220 white LEDs concealed behind, but it is so much more than a mirror or a light. It is a decorative piece of design, with more than a hint of retro styling. It is available in either black or white, both costing $3,500, which is a considerable sum for a light or mirror but not so bad for a work of art!

Visit the Birkiland website for further details.

Habitat Sit space age garden planters

Sit

Sometimes a picture doesn't quite do a product justice – and that's definitely the case with these Habitat Sit garden planters.

But if you see them 'in the flesh' in a store, you're sure to be impressed. Very much in the 70s space age style, the Sit planters are big no matter which one you got for – 54 x 60cm for the 'tall' planter or 82 x 28cm for the 'wide' one. Both are made of lacquered fibreglass and both come with contrasting coloured pots inside. And if you want something with impact in your garden, they're well worth a look.

Prices start at £89.

Onitsuka Tiger Lawnship trainers

Lawnship

Originally a tennis shoe from the mid-70s, the Onitsuka Tiger Lawnship trainers are now quite stylish and understated casual footwear.

Introduced back in 1976, the shoe has been slightly updated for the modern era, but still keeps the retro look, throwing in a leather finish with suede panels and an anti-slip sole, should you encounter any rain or snow.

Take your pick from various colour options, selling for around £60.

New vintage style dress from Valentino

Valentino

Valentino has long been a brand associated with high glamour and big bucks. Though it reached its peak in the 1980s, the brand has a history of classic style taking precendence over current trends and their new designs remain steeped in vintage style.

This dress from their new collection has a definite fifties feel. With a kneelength skirt and a wide boat neck, there are references to both a fifties and sixties high glamour aesthetic. A modern, understated touch is added with frilled sleeves, while the block colour keeps it classic.

Available in both red and black, this dress is online to buy in the UK from Matches Fashion for £1286.
