Not (as you might think), a classic piece from the late 50s or early 60s, this is the Audrey String table lamp, available from your local B&Q.
But to the untrained eye, this could easily pass as a typical piece of mid-century design. Those tripod-like legs hold a lamp crafted from mild steel and string, with a contrasting inner and outer colour of light and dark brown. And you can even fit an energy-saving bulb in it.
But best of all, this is B&Q, so it’s cheap – £39.98 to be precise.
Rock legends Kiss released solo albums from each band member on September 18th 1978 – and in that same year, Vans launched the Sk8-Hi shoe. So it seems sensible to release a collaboration to celebrate the 30th anniversary – the Vans X Kiss Sk8-Hi shoe.
The release of the four solo albums was the first (and possibly only) time that a band has released solo albums on the same day – and the covers of those albums, with each member in full make-up, is the design on the new Sk8-Hi shoe.
Strictly for fans of both shoe and group I’d guess, you can pick up a pair in the coming weeks for an as-yet undisclosed price.
Shoe Missy specialise in handcrafting personality onto basic, classic shoe styles, giving you a bespoke piece of footwear style. They take a lot of their inspiration from classic retro style icons, as is the case with this pair of Brigitte shoes.
Named for the classic French beauty, these shapely heels combine a Breton colour scheme with unusual crimp style trim and a flirty polka dot bow on the vamp.
They’re available made to order from Shoe Missy for £55.
We love Bobbin Bicycles – and it seems like we’re not the only ones, with Bobbin Bicycles upsizing into its first retail shop from 1st October.
The new store is close to the Angel Islington, specifically at 19 Arlington Way, London EC1R 1UY, offering up a range of super-cool retro bikes, along with luggage, Italian leather panniers, reflective kit, bright rain capes and just about anything else for the stylish cyclist.
And if you get down in the first week, you can check out possibly the coolest bike of them all – the Electra Amsterdam Girard Madonna Bicycle. As you might have guessed, it’s inspired by Eames collaborator Alexander Girard, with the saddle and grips in a pale blue and white 50s Girard print, coupled with a red powder-coated frame, pale blue rims, dress guards and two distinctive Girard folk characters. It’s not for sale as yet, but you could always check out when it might be available by popping into the store.
A design that’s still catching the eye over 40 years since its launch – the Zanotta Reale dining table.
It was designed by Carlo Mollino back in 1946, an interesting shape and from a distance, not unlike your average DIY workbench. But look closely and you’ll appreciate the attention to detail that’s gone into that wooden frame, far in excess of what’s required to support the bevel-edged 15mm plate glass top.
We can’t all afford an Eames or Barcelona chair, but the Ikea Stockholm easy chair can offer up classic looks for most budgets.
It’s a 50s-style chair, sturdily supported by solid oak legs, with the moulded polyurethane foam seating offered with a number of (in the main) retro-styled covers, including the two pictured above.
It sells with the cover of your choice for £189. And should you get bored of the one you choose, you can buy a replacement cover for £49. Find out more at the Ikea website
