Betsey Johnson Paisley Cardigan

Paisley_cardigan

Betsey Johnson is a designer who is by no means afraid of a bold print, and thankfully for us she takes most of her inspiration from retro staples. Paisley was made a true fashion classic in the 1960s, and this bold version with a great colour palette makes this cardigan a statement piece.

The black base means this piece is wearable with most plain outfits, and the swirling shades of orange, pink and blue make a classic psychedelic combination.

The cardigan is available online from Betsey Johnson’s boutique for $235.

Marilyn Room Divider

Ssimage20080524483800513b2e5

The trouble with being an icon is that your image ends up on all sorts of products, and Marilyn Monroe’s image must be one of the most (over) used. However, this Marilyn Room Divider manages to make good use of some familiar images.

The divider consists of three panels, each measuring 180 x 45 x 2.5cm and featuring two images of the starlet. The photographs are sepia tinged so that they work well with the vintage style of the divider.

It costs just under £160 and can be ordered from England at Home.

London Transport Museum’s Moquette furniture range – using fabrics from the 1930s to the 1970s

Moquette

London Transport Museum has found a use for its old rolls of hard-wearing Moquette fabric – creating the London Transport Museum’s Moquette furniture range.

Moquette was used on bus and tube seats from the 30s through to the 70s, a tough fabric able to take the wear and tear of constant daily use. But it wasn’t just functional – designers were constantly brought in to liven up the fabric, creating looks that are both stylish and very distinct to their eras.

Fred Perry Perf leather plimsole

Perry_plim

An interesting twist on a classic casual shoe – the Fred Perry Perf leather plimsole.

The ‘Perf’ obviously means perforated – the white leather upper packed full of holes for an eye-catching effect (and quite possibly to offer your foot some breathing space too).

Other features include the gum base and embroidered Fred Perry logo – and you can pick up a pair for £55.

BiOrb Life space age aquarium

Biorb

A very new design with a distinctly late 60s look – the BiOrb Life aquarium.

Yes, if they kept fish in Space 1999, it would have been in something like this, with a coloured acrylic finish and clear front, along with a circular port at the top that offers access to the actual fish and water. Clever stuff too – an easy-to-change filter system makes fish keeping a doddle, while an LED lighting system changes to create sunrise, sunlight, sunset and moonlight.

Three sizes available (30, 45 and 60 litre), with prices starting at around £190 when it launches in the next few weeks.

Retro Retreat: 1960s space age Hotel Jested in Liberec, Czech Republic

Jested

If you’re willing to travel a little off the beaten path, the Hotel Jested in Liberec, Czech Republic should be worth the effort.

It was the work of architect Karel Hubacek, who won a competition in the late 60s to design a communications tower and hotel. He managed to squeeze both into the same design – using carbon construction and motorcycle suspensions to support and protect the communications tower and the sloping exterior to create a ‘space cabin’ feel for the 20 rooms. It also offers superb views – Germany, Poland and the surround Czech countryside (which is popular with walkers) are all within eyeshot.
