Build your own VW Camper Van

Build_bus

If an Airfix fighter plane kit doesn’t quite fulfil your creative urges, maybe the thought of building a VW Camper Van will appeal.

Build Your Own VW Bus is in the traditional of those old model kits, but with a bit more cool. Available in blue or red, you get all the small pieces (plus screwdriver and instructions) that will undoubtedly test your patience as the nights draw in. But if you have the time and an eye for detail, you’ll be rewarded with a working model featuring a die-cast metal body, opening doors, pull back and go motor, bolts, lights and dashboards. And the feeling of pride that comes with a job well done.

Available online, you can pick one up for £7.99.

Jeeves and Wooster hat-based pendant lighting

Jeeveswooster It’s rare to see a top hat or a bowler hat on the streets today, but you can offer them a home in your home with these Jeeves and Wooster pendant lights.

Designed by Jake Phipps, these are seriously quirky lights, but are designed for long-term use, with a black wool felt exterior and VO fire-rated polycarbonate diffuser. There’s also fire-rated brass electrical fittings and a cord with a standard ceiling fitting.

You can buy each individually from the Hidden Art Shop, although it is slightly cheaper to buy the two designs as a pair – £415 if you opt for both.

Eero Aarnio Screw Table

1315The thinking behind the Eero Aarnio Screw Table was that screws are used in every building but mostly hidden away, so he decided to design a product to honour them as visible objects!

Aarnio’s original Screw Table is still in production by Adelta and can be bought online from Design Shop UK. Prices start at approximately £1,400 and go up to approximately £1650 depending on the size and finish of the table.

However, if this is out of your price range but you still want this quirky tribute to industrial design in your home, then Retro Republic are selling their own version inspired by the original at the much more affordable price of £65.

Tykho Radio

Tykho_lgThe Tykho Radio isn’t strictly speaking a retro radio as it was first produced just 10 years ago. But its shape does remind me of a Lego building brick and regular readers will know how much we like Lego products!

As well as its Lego-esque design, its rubber cover means it is totally waterproof so is ideal for listening to in the bath. It has already been earmarked as a future design classic by MOMA who have one in their permanent collection.

Aria are selling them in four colours, priced £45 each.

Warhol-style Banana shower adhesive

Slipnomore Digging deep on the French design site Atypyk, we’ve encountered a very smart addition for your bathroom – this Andy Warhol-style Banana shower adhesive.

It works like a shower mat, just peel your banana, stick to the bath or shower (wherever you might stand) and its non-slip surface will stop you from slipping or stumbling as you wash. And of course, they’ll add some retro cool to your bathroom.

Three in a pack, with a pack retailing for 12 Euros (which is around £8).
