ThinkGeek’s Robot Calculator

Robot_calculator
We do love a robot here at Retro To Go and we have featured a Robot Calculator previously. But this Robot Calculator from ThinkGeek is different – it has moving arms and legs.

Yes, looking like an extra from Woody Allen’s Sleeper movie, this calculator will do your addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, but those moving arms and legs also allow it to be positioned and allow it to hold things (like the LED light it comes with). If that’s not enough, there’s even a magnet on the back for holding paper clips and a memo holder on the back of the head,

Essentially, everything you need for desk – and retailing for just $14.99 (around £8).

Tate Gallery’s Mirror Film Strip

Mirror_film
The Tate in London recently held its How We Are: Photographing Britain exhibition, issuing a range of merchandise to support it – and that includes this rather smart Mirror Film Strip.

It’s a mirror, sized at 65 x 50cm and designed by London-based Graphic Thought Facility in the shape of old camera film (you know, the stuff you used before the advent of digital cameras).

It’s also a limited edition of 72 (two rolls of 36 exposure film apparently), with each mirror numbered and supplied with wall fixings and hanging instructions.

You can buy it online from the Tate, priced at £140.

Green Light Concepts Traffic Light pendant lights

Traffic_lights

An example of being green and a very cool piece of lighting – the Green Light Concepts Traffic Light pendant lights.

Yes, these lights use the coloured glass off a traffic light – red, yellow and green (although the green of these US-made lights looks distinctly blue). There’s a choice of 8 and 12-inch diameter lights, all sat in an anodised aluminium housing and using a low voltage bulb.

Impress your visitors with what looks like a piece of quirky vintage lighting, then impress them some more with your recycling of an everyday object. Prices start at $240 (around £120).

Piet Mondrian-inspired Mondri vase

Mondri_vase
Want to add some colour to your living room? You could do it with this Mondri vase.

It’s the work of Danish designer Frank Kerdil, but with obvious inspiration from the work of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian in the 1920s. So in effect, you’re getting a vase and a work of art in one. Clever too – with three openings, you can turn the vase round for the size you need.

Available online from the Museum of Contemporary Art, you can pick it up for $75 (around £38).

George Nelson Zoo Timers

561 In sharp contract to the Eye Clock and other George Nelson clocks we’ve featured previously, the renowned designer also produced a range of clocks for children, the Zoo Timers.

Although also manufactured by Vitra, they could not be more different from his other clocks. These designs showcase Nelson’s talent as a graphic designer and reflect the more playful design trends of the 1960s. There are four in the series, each one a brightly coloured cartoon animal. Pictured here is Talulah the Toucan, but you can also choose from Omar the Owl, Fernando the Fish or Elihu the Elephant.

They are available from Nest priced around £75 each.
