Handcrafted Modern by Leslie Williamson

Handcrafted modernism

Looking for some interiors inspiration? A flick through the 200-plus pages of Handcrafted Modern by Leslie Williamson should give you some ideas. As implied by its subtitle, 'At home with mid-century designers', these are directly drawn from the homes of some of our best loved designers.

In this highly visual book, photographer Williamson goes to the homes of 14 different mid-century designers to look at their own interpretations of modernism. As part of her quest she only visits homes that have been left unchanged (although some are now museums), including the abodes of George Nakashima, Harry Bertoia and Charles and Ray Eames, as well as the highlight of seeing inside Walter Gropius's Bauhaus home in Massachusetts, USA.

Published by Rizzoli, it's currently for sale for £25.50 on Amazon.

Eames Lounge XL by Charles and Ray Eames

Eamesxl

Are we all just getting bigger? Indeed we are, because that midcentury icon, the Eames Lounge Chair, just isn't big enough for us in 2010. So here comes the Eames Lounge XL.

Designed back in 1956 by (you guessed it) Charles and Ray Eames, the chair was the designers' first high-end product and one that still sits proudly in New York's Museum of Modern Art. If you think 'Eames' or 'midcentury', you probably think of this.

Vitra DSR plastic upholstered chair by Charles and Ray Eames

Dsr

Yesterday we featured the updated DAR Chair and today we have another classic with a twist – the Vitra DSR plastic upholstered chair by Charles and Ray Eames.

Yes, similar to the DAR, this is another midcentury gem from 1950, originally made from fibreglass but now made of polypropylene for ecological reasons. Aside from that, it's much the same with 'Eiffel Tower' style leg base and comfortable/functional shell, except it now has upholstery.

Take your pick from numerous Hopsak finishes in 'mid century modern colours', all available to order now and all selling for £424.
