eBay watch: 1970s desk lamp

Lamp

Quirky and cheap, that's what we like about this 1970s desk lamp.

It's an eye-catching piece of modernist-inspired design, the lampshade made of sheet metal, lacquered white on the inside to maximise light reflection with the top part of the stem in chrome, the bottom being metal that's lacquered orange, all combining to create a lamp that's easy to direct over your work.

It's described as in 'good condition and in full working order', but there is the the odd age-related mark, all of which are outlined on the site. Price? Right now it's a very tasty 99 pence.

Satin Metal Onion table lamp by Verner Panton

Onion

A distinctive piece of lighting, but the Satin Metal Onion table lamp by Verner Panton comes at a price.

The design dates back to 1977, with the lamp made of satin metal vertical, compressed lamellae to create that 'Onion' shape. The result os something sculptural that gives out atmospheric, indirect light.

Finished off with a transparent wire and requiring a 100W clear bulb for that light, this 80cm tall light is yours for £1,225.

Tesco retro desk lamp

Tesco lamp

Tesco isn't the first place I'd go when looking for new lighting but their retro desk lamp is worth a look.

It's their budget version of the classic Anglepoise design, made from metal and using the distinctive spring hinging. It's available in either black or the red colour shown. They've also an oversized version of the lamp for sale – measuring 188cm high.

The lamp costs a bargain £20.

eBay watch: 1970s eyeball-style ceiling light and wall lights

Orange1

If the colour doesn't convince you, the design is almost certainly a giveaway of the origins of this 1970s eyeball-style ceiling light and wall lights.

Yes, that's right, not just the light above, some wall lights thrown it too. But let's look at the main fitting first. That being a distinctive thing with chrome ceiling rose, orange 'stem' and three eyeball-style spotlights for targeting light around the room.

Pedrera PD1 1950s table lamp by Barba Corsini

Pedrera

We featured the floor version some time back, but now you can get a smaller and indeed cheaper Pedrera PD1 table lamp.

Like its big brother, it was designed by Barba Corsini for Gaudi’s La Pedrera building in Barcelona in 1955, when the building was being renovated into flats. Indeed, the light takes inspiration from Gaudi’s chimneys.

That original design was reworked by Jq. Ruiz Millet and is available in this 34cm tall size and of course, made of steel. You can buy one for £119.

Lamponi introduces new range of Lambretta table lamps

Lam1

You might have seen the Vespa lamps and a Lambretta lamp in the past, but now Lamponi has just finished a new set of handmade Lambretta table lamps.

Presumably following the same principle of the past, the lamps mix salvaged old parts with new pieces in the style of vintage Lambrettas to produce something eye-catching, but above all, unique as each item is craftsman made, right down to the polishing and painting.

One of the new lights is pictured above, the other over the page. A talking point for sure, but one that comes at a price – for all that time and effort, you'll be looking at anything from £800. Get in touch with the Italian designer for a definite price and turnaround time.
