B&Q Tecton – giant Anglepoise-style lamp for your living room

Bq_angle

Some of you may remember the Giant Anglepoise 1227 lamp, which was produced to celebrate the company's 70th anniversary. The asking price was £1,660. Thankfully B&Q has done something along similar lines for a fraction of the price with the Tecton floor lamp.

Ok, it;s not quite as big and doesn't wheel around the room like the original giant Anglepoise, but the it does still offer that look, standing 170cm (approaching 6ft) tall, with the ability to direct that large shade and its light pretty much where you want via the adjustable metal frame.

Black and white are the colour options and if you haven't got a van, you can get it delivered to your home by ordering online. Price? That's a very affordable £79.

Felix Rise and Fall retro ceiling light at John Lewis

Felix

Look familiar? Well, to us it looks not unlike the classic Louis Poulsen PH lamp, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and comes with a hefty price tag. The Felix Rise and Fall ceiling light is a little more affordable.

It's very much in the same style, those individual shades offering up glare-free light, but with that handle and 'Rise and Fall' mechanism, you can bring the light just a little bit closer when you need it.

The shade is a black-painted metal, the detailing chrome and you cna user it as a dimmable light. Price? That's £120.

eBay watch: 1970s Pine Moon light

Pine

It's not quite a Verner Panton Moon light, but this Pine Moon light isn't a million miles away.

Pine is the material here, with the lampshade made of eight concentric pine laminates circles held by two vertical rods, a pine one at the bottom and another housing the bulb casing at the top. All can be adjusted for different lighting effects.

It is said to be in decent order, with a few age marks and is currently offered for a fraction of the price of Panton reissue. How much? Just 99 pence as I type.

Louis Poulsen 1960s Discus 350 ceiling light by Arne Jacobsen

Discus1

Stylish and simple, with a history thrown in, the Louis Poulsen Discus 350 ceiling light by Arne Jacobsen could be a timeless addition to your home.

It was designed back in 1963, specifically for illuminating indoor staircases and exterior walls for a city hall in Denmark, the shade being perfect for diffusing 'soft' light over a large area, while the glass diffuser means an even distribution of light.

Those utilitarian looks haven't aged and are unlikely to anytime soon. So the £295 price might be a worthy investment. Check out a wall light variation over the page too, retailing for the same price.

Pedrera 1950s PD2 floor lamp by Barba Corsini

Pedr

A midcentury design with a modern twist has been reissued once more by Gubi – the Pedrera PD2 floor lamp.

Here's the history. The PD2 was produced for Gaudi’s La Pedrera building in Barcelona in 1955, part of Spanish architect Barba Corsini's renovation of the building (into flats). The light was produced to fit in with the 'feel' of the design, with inspiration taken from Gaudi’s chimneys.

The original design from 1955 was 're-edited' by Jq. Ruiz Millet in 1991 and returns once more today in steel and standing around 112cm high. If you want a piece of history in your home, it retails for £459.
