Michelle Mason Forest Picnic tea towel

Forest tea towel

Michelle Mason's colourful retro designs are always favourites on this site, so it's good to see some new products from the designer, including this Forest Picnic tea towel.

Like most of her designs, it's mid-century inspired, though the colours, the depiction of the vintage ceramics and the flora give it something of a Scandinavian feel too. The effect is further enhanced by its striking turquoise, pale blue and black colour scheme.

The tea towel costs £10.

50s-style printed scarves from Tate

Tate scarves
New in at the Tate Museum shop are these 50s-style printed scarves.

They've been produced to accompany the current Miro exhibition at Tate Modern. Miro's art influenced the designs of Lucienne Day, amongst many others, so it's hardly surprising that these scarves nod towards her work. Made from 100% linen, they are decorated with a pattern that uses the sketchy, skeletal forms so associated with 50s designs.

Available in three colours, the scarves cost £45 each.

G-Plan Wingback Sofa from Hopper & Space

Sofa
Hopper & Space have some of the best examples of reconditioned mid-century furniture out there and this G-Plan Wingback Sofa in particular has caught our eye.

The original G-Plan piece has been rejuvenated with a fresh coat of varnish on the oak legs and reupholstered in striking period-perfect powder blue brushed linen & cream cotton. Perhaps not the sort of colours advisable for our readers with children, pets or particularly grubby household members but an excellent original piece lovingly restored to it's former glory that any retro devotee will no doubt treasure for years to come.

As you might expect, the sofa doesn't come cheap. If you love enough to part with your hard earned cash, it'll set you back £1295 from the Hopper & Space website.

Bark sofa

A classic design that's hand-made from the materials of your choosing – if you're willing to pay a bit more than high street for your seating it would certainly be worth you checking out this retro sofa from Bark Furniture.

This mid-century style sofa, for example, is available as either a two- or three-seater number, both options sharing those angled lines and paired back look. You get a choice of four different hardwoods for your frame and a variety of upholstery options.

Of course, this sofa comes with a price tag to match this relative freedom and the craftsmanship involved. Prices start at £1360 for a maple wood two-seater and, don't forget, you'll need to pay for your upholstery too.

Jolie table lamp from John Lewis

Jolie

It's impossible to escape the mid-century homewares trend at the moment. However, with original pieces becoming harder to find at reasonable prices and many reproductions being out of us mere mortals' budget, it's always a pleasent surprise to find items with a retro influence which don't break the bank.

This colourful Jolie table lamp from John Lewis is influenced by the iconic Italian design house Kartell, who were, of course, responsible for the famous Philippe Starck Ghost Chair. The clear glass base houses the feature colour flex cable which matches the barrel lampshade. A simple yet striking 60s-style design that doesn't cost the earth; now you just need somewhere to put it.

The Jolie table lamp, available in 7 colours, is a very reasonable £35 from John Lewis. See website for more details.
